Beach Baby Lyrics

Do you remember back in old L.A. (oh oh oh)
When everybody drove a Chevrolet (oh oh oh)
Whatever happened to the boy next door
The sun-tanned crew-cut all-American male

Remember dancin' at the high school hop (oh oh oh)
The dress I ruined with the soda pop (oh oh oh)
I didn't recognize the girl next-door
The beat up sneakers and the pony tail

Beach baby, Beach Baby give me your hand
Give me somethin' that I can remember
Just like before we can walk by the shore in the moonlight
Beach baby, Beach baby there on the sand
From July 'till the end of September
Surfin' was fun, we'd be out in the sun every day

Mmmm, I never thought that it would end
Oooooh oooooh, mmmm, and I was everybody's friend Ooooh ooooh
Long hot days
Cool sea haze
Jukebox plays
But now it's fading awaaaaay

[Bridge, Music and ah's]

We couldn't wait for graduation Day oh oh oh
We took my car and drove to San Jose oh oh oh
That's where you told me that you'd wear my ring
I guess you don't remember anything

Beach baby, Beach Baby give me your hand (give me your hand)
Give me somethin' that I can remember (give me something to remember)
Just like before we can walk by the shore in the moonlight
Beach baby, Beach baby there on the sand (there on the sand)
From July 'till (from July) the end of September (to September)
Surfin' was fun, we'd be out in the sun every day

i think it's about the singer just recalling "the good ol' days". This song was in the film "Scotland, PA" and I thought it sounded cool XD

I don't think this is a bad song. It brings back a lot of memories of when I was a kid. Not because we did any of the things in the song, but because it was played on the radio a lot in 1974 when it came out. Mainly in the summer prior to my Freshman year in High School. Everyone liked the song because of the music. It had a pretty good sound. Some of the words were misheard, like "Blue Sea Haze", which if you look the song lyrics up, they can't even agree if it's that or "Cool Sea Haze". I have to believe it's "Blue Sea Haze because it was heard by us as "Boozy haze", which also starts with a "B". Anyway, I digress. The main thing here is that this song is not a bad song. It's just one of those songs you eventually got tired of hearing because it was on the radio a lot. I like it because it reminds me of a time when I was younger and just having fun.

I wouldn't say the song sucks. Sure, there's really no deep meaning, nor are the lyrics that amazing, but it's still a suitable song. Just carefree 70's pop.

While I partially agree with Da H8RRR, I believe that roltan and ferret111 are missing the heavy implications of the line, "I guess you don't remember anything" The unforgiving hell this guy must have endured in order to still be able to remember "The dress [he] ruined with the soda pop" and the utter desperation that engendered his plea of "Give me somethin' that I can remember" and again the stinging accusation, "I guess YOU don't remember anything" - - How about the clever way he sings "Cool sea haze" to sound like "Boozy haze" - - You just know this guy is at rock bottom. Not to mention the overpowering emasculation caused by his failed marriage this poor sap must have felt while remembering that "[he] was everybody's friend Ooooh ooooh. Damn right, Ooooh ooooh!! If this song is just bubblegum it must be regurgitated bubblegum, flavored with bile, Jack Daniels and the salty tears of a beach bum wandering the shores of his youth at night contemplating his last ride.

I completely agree with you! I always thought it was a silly, frivolous song but when I listened to it again as an adult I realized how incredibly sad it was - I thought maybe she had lost her mind or memory and he was trying to get her to remember something but your interpretation sounds right.

Absolutely perfect pop song - Numerous different melodies all blending together brilliantly to create a great summer feeling with not a little nostalgia thrown in to boot. If you think it is trite, you may never have lived !

The last line where he sings "I guess you don't remember anything" makes me think that they never made it to San Jose. They got into a horrible car accident! His memory survived, but hers didn't. I have no idea how the songwriter intended it, but it sounds like she wound up with permanent amnesia!

My Interpretation

@kdm13159 Or they are old and she has Alzheimer's

This song paints a picture of being teenagers, hitting it off at a dance, spending time together at the beach a lot, and getting engaged, only for it to eventually go south.

Sock Hops were popular in the 1950s. They were school dances where kids showed up and took their uncomfortable school shoes off to dance and unwind in a gymnasium or somewhere similar on campus. The singer describes the time he and his lover bumped into each other (possibly literally) at the Sock Hop and he spilled soda pop on her dress as a meet cute of sorts even though they'd supposedly known each other from being neighbors for years prior ("I didn't recognize the girl next door").

He pleads with her to take his hand and walk with him on the beach, possibly to reconcile or reminisce ("...give me your hand/give me something that I can remember"). The song goes on to describe their summer(s) being together where she'd be a beach bunny getting a tan and he'd be out surfing and having fun. Before they graduated, however, he proposed to her on a whim while they drove up to San Jose (which is a 6-hour drive. The song doesn't make it clear WHY they drove to San Jose except to maybe just "get away" from everything.)

The true end of the song is when the singer states "I guess you don't remember anything," which indicates those were the good ol' days and their life together isn't as great as it was when they were in high school. Considering sock hops were popular in the 1950s and went out of style by the 1970s, and the song was written in 1974, it's safe to say this is a relationship that's on its last legs and the two members have been together possibly for as long as decade.
