Consider the Ravens Lyrics

I've got bills to pay
Taxman on my tail
Just keep prayin' that
the check's in the mail

There are times it seems
when everything's lost
and I'm moaning, I'm tossed
and I see..

between the river and the ravens I'm fed
between oblivion and the blazes I'm led
So father give me faith, providence and grace
Between the river and ravens I'm fed
Sweet deliver, oh you lift up my head
and lead me in your way

I've grown sick and tired
of trying to stand still
I've learned to let the wind
pull me where it will

Throw myself into
the will of the wait
I can never be great
'til we're free

between the river and the ravens I'm fed
between oblivion and the blazes I'm led
So father give me faith, providence and grace
Between the river and ravens I'm fed
Sweet deliver, oh you lift up my head
and lead me in your way

Although I'm walking through
the valley of the shadow of death
evils all around
It's coming from the right and the left

Trust that I will see
the glory above
Oh, your banner of love
flies over me

between the river and the ravens I'm fed
between oblivion and the blazes I'm led
So father give me faith, providence and grace
Between the river and ravens I'm fed
Sweet deliver, oh you lift up my head
and lead me in your way

I think the main theme of the song is that life can be difficult sometimes and when we face these tribulations, it's best to ask God for guidance and direction. I think there is also a reference to Elijah from the Bible. There is a story where Elijah had to drink water from a brook and ravens came and fed him.

I believe the lyrics of the chorus are actually: Between the river and the ravens I'm fed Between oblivion and the places i've been

It's actually:

"between the river and the ravens i'm fed between oblivion and the blazes i'm led"

I got the CD today and looked at the lyrics, which are all incredible...

And yeah i think its a reference to Luke 24(?)

Luke 12:24 "Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds!"

Amazing song. I'm not a religious person but his songs are very... I'm not sure how to put it so ill just say "believing". Great with Thrice, and just as great solo, i won't put one above the other. Just an amazing song on top of an amazing album.

the entire song is about feeling down, life's lows, and asking god to help him see it through. however one part of the song is somewhat different:

"I've grown sick and tired of trying to stand still I've learned to let the wind pull me where it will"

i am guessing, he is using the wind as conformity. he has tried to go against what everyone else is doing, but now he is conforming.

also,

"Throw myself into the will of the wait I can never be great 'til we're free"

talks about liberty.

i signed up with this website just for this post..... i have seen several interviews with dustin on this cd and he sticks to the his guns on one thing, he has always had a constant battle with god he doesn't know if he is real or something programmed into his mind and he likes to express that, so anyone who thinks this is a christian cd or all about god that fact is incorrect but you are always entitled to your own opinion...

No one is saying every single song on the album is about God. Obviously, Pistol is not. But to say that Dustin Kensrue is not a Christian man, and to imply that this song isn't about a man totally surrendering himself to God is absolutely insane. He says father, which is universal for God. The line "sweet deliverer" gives it away as well.

I havent seen any of the interview that thrice 23 is talking about, but i have seen some where the interviewer asks him about the spirtality and relgion asspect of his writting and he clearly gets kinda restless. I wouldnt doubt he struggles wit the god asspect for a sewcond. Kensrue is a great singer/songwritter of our time. He clearly has some sort spirtuality and religion in him. i saw on interview where he was actually asked if he considered his music to be christian music. All kensrue would really saw was that he didnt agree with the classification of what cristion music is considered (pharaphrase on my part)

I think the lyrics are "I've learned to let the wind BLOW me where it will" this speaks of the Holy Spirits leading in our lives, because like what wtm17 was saying is that we try to take control of situations we possibly can't because we're scared and insecure, we can' put our faith in ourselves but in Jesus, Dustin was resisting before but now He's learning to go with the flow of the Holy Spirit, he doesn't know exactly where he is going but he doesn't need 2 worry cuz God is faithful and true, He provides(providence) and will empower us supernaturally with His grace. and I think it is"Sweet Deliverer"

What an incredible songwriter Dustin is. I've listened to this song over and over and after a year or so - it finally hit me what this song it about. It's written from the perspective and life of Elijah. Elijah is found is the Hebrew Scriptures.

To read the full story of Elijah and how Dustin communicate his story through this song check out 1st Kings 17:1
