Get Down Moses Lyrics
Prairie full o' lost souls running from the priests of iniquity
Where the hell was Elijah?
Well, what do you do; the prophecy game was through
We gotta take the walls of Jericho
(Na na-na na-na na na)
Put your lips together and blow
(Na na-na na-na na na)
To the very top
(Na na-na na-na na na)
Say the truth crystallizes, like jewels
In the rock, in the rock
Carve another tablet out o' L.S.D.
(Get down Moses) out in Tennessee
(Get down Moses) down in the street
The blood is washing down all the gravel to our feet
(Get down Moses) down in the pit
Crashing on a downtown strip
Looking in the eyes of the diamonds and the spies and the hip
Who's sponsoring the crack ghetto?
Who's lecturing? who's in the know and in the don't know?
We better take the walls of Jericho
(Na na-na na-na na na)
Put your lips together and blow
(Na na-na na-na na na)
Goin' to the very top
(Na na-na na-na na na)
Where the truth crystallizes, like jewels
In the rock, in the rock
You gotta to make a new friend out of old enemy
(Get down Moses) back in Genesee
(Get down Moses) down with the dreads
They got a lotta reasoning in a dreadhead
(Get down Moses) down in the street
Carve another tablet out of L.S.D.
(Get down Moses) out in Tennessee
(Get down Moses) down in the street
The blood is washing down all the gravel to our feet
(Get down Moses) down in the pit
(Get down Moses)
We need to eat, we gotta chew it over with our wisdom teeth
(Get down Moses)
two words for this song fuck and yeah
Iconoclasm is a necessary part of the journey thru this fun house world. Joe talks to the icons of his time at his level. Eye to eye. I interpret Joe's seeming irreverence toward Moses and (in the live track of the pre-album version of this song) Elijah, as an iconoclastic purging of the dross within our myths and laws which, to the searching soul, only seem to hinder the soul's outward, inward, upward journey toward revelation. At the mountaintop, after this clearing of superfluous lore, all that remains is pure truth; which crystalizes, "....like jewels in the rock." And, lest we miss the point, as if to let us know that there is so much more than "rock", in conclusion Joe sews it all up by saying we had all better chew all he is saying over. Chew it with our "wisdom teeth". This is a truly inspired work.
Na Na-Na Na-Na Na-Na!
This band may be the most under appreciated band of all time. What a song, another one by the Mescaleros gets stuck in my head every week. I'm not sure what the lyrics mean, maybe something about a mystical drug experience, but it rocks.
