When The Circus Comes Lyrics

Could have had a chance
To get out of this wreck
The time that you came
And the day that you left
Could have had a chance
Could have had a chance

Never thought I could make it this far
With a dent in my soul
And a hole in my heart
Never thought I could
Never thought I could

But when the lights are turning 'round
And wheels are rolling on the ground
That day I'll burn this whole place down
When the circus comes to town

You left your name carved on a tree
You scratched mine out
Right in front of me
Didn't mean that much
Didn't mean that much

But when the lights are turning 'round
And wheels are rolling on the ground
That day I'll burn this whole place down
When the circus comes to town

I'll scratch your name out on that tree
I'll chase your heart right out of me
Doesn't mean that much
Doesn't mean that much

But when the lights are turning 'round
And wheels are rolling on the ground
That day I'll burn this whole place down
When the circus comes to town

Nobody has written anything on this song? Well it has almost perfect meaning for me. A song about heartbreak in the worst way.

"Could have had a chance to get out of this wreck, the time that you came and the day that you left"

This line means the most and I think that Los Lobos is trying to say that he could have not experienced this much heartbreak they day you first met (you could have just turned away and not even gotton into this relationship in the first place) and the day that you left - meaning, if you dropped it the day your significant other left with no regrets or grudges then you wouldn't feel this way either.

To me this song is all about redemption from heartache... Speaking as someone who has actively code to both participate and not in regular society, there has been not many things more romantic than the idea of “running away and joining the circus...” So the line “one day I’ll burn this whole place down when the circus comes to town” speaks to me on a very deep level; To me I hear it as “fuck this shit and fuck you, I’m going where I can be myself” Burn all your bridges and leave with the circus... such a beautiful heartwrenching song

Yea so I had listened to this song many times and definitly thought it had to do with heartache for sure. In the past I took a more general interpretation of it meaning being in a cruddy situation, whether with family, friend, or lover. Many times I felt this way usually addiction had its hand in it.

Listening again with my girlfriend, and she said it's an ex lover who wanted nothing to do with him anymore so he wants to go somewhere where he can be free to be himself. It's kind of hard to argue that, considering the opening lines of the song, the writer makes it pretty clear it's about a lost love.

Truly love this song, so good!
