On Lyrics

I am on
Switched on
A sudden clearness
And clarity

Hidden away
In every locked toilet
I've been waiting for you
In the Joiners' arms

I know your name
I know your name
I've danced with you
We're all friends here

Silver slugs
Lined up like bullets
Rolled up twenties
They disappear

You make my tongue loose
You make my tongue loose
I am hopeful and stutter-free

You make my tongue loose
You make my tongue loose
I am home free

On Friday night
I do all the talking
A pint and a fight
The dance floor is mine

Truth serum
And limbs that won't listen
Drunken "I love you"s
On top of the world

And when it runs out
We're chasing something we'll never catch
And when it runs out
We buy more

A flatness so bleak
I've been bitten by a vampire
A flatness bleaker
Than the one it replaced

You make my tongue loose
You make my tongue loose
I am hopeful and stutter-free

You make my tongue loose
You make my tongue loose
I am home free

I can charm
I can charm them all
I can charm
Them all

I can charm
I can charm them all
I can charm
Them all

You make my tongue loose
You make my tongue loose
I am hopeful and stutter-free

You make my tongue loose
You make my tongue loose
I am home free

I can charm
I can charm them all
I can charm
Them all

I can charm
I can charm them all
I can charm
Them all

This song is about cocaine.

From an interview...

"Silver slugs lined up like bullets, rolled up twenties they disappear, you make my tongue loose." Is this an unashamed celebration of the liberation of hedonism?

"Yes," Okereke begins. "And no. After Silent Alarm, I realized I could have tried harder, so with this record I thought, 'I'll be honest about everything.' All the ugly thoughts, all the things you wouldn't tell your best friend. A warts-and-all account of where my mind is right now. It's a song about getting fucked up on a Friday night. In east London you can't go anywhere without someone having cocaine on them. Suddenly, when we came back from tour it was all around me. But it's not a moralizing song about using cocaine - more an explanation of the appeal and the comedown."

wow, i never saw that coming! drugs? do you think kele, russell, matt, and gordon have all tried drugs?

or is it just about people they know?

This song is SO obviously about cocaine

I have never looked at it this way before. I can see now. I think that it is a shame. But I guess with all songs you can have your own take on it and if it means whatever to you it's acceptable.

I can only Imagine him snorting lines before going on stage.

In The Prayer he sings "Tonight make me unstoppable And I will charm...." I believe he is saying cocaine gives him confidence to "out shine the moon" atleast in his own mind.

In this song I think he is too obvious about drugs, and in my mind it's almost like braging. I think drugs can influence great music, but great music isnt directly about drugs. It isn't creative.

Throughout the who album the lead singer (Kele Okereke) comes off sounding really into himself, and narcissistic.

@hiding_in_cupboards "out shine the moon" Wrong. it's "outshine them all"

It is so obviously about drugs. It describes the feeling so well. obviously "rolled up twenties" refers to sniffing cocaine. Its just talking about how drugs can make u feel awesome and invincible and when it wears off u feel flat so u get more. But "chasing something we'll never catch" coz it never lasts forever. I love this song.

Yay! I'm glad someone at least attempted these lyrics! Thank you :) Since it's a work in progress I'm gonna try to help out a bit.

I'm thinking the chorus should actually be: You make my tongue loose You make my tongue loose I am hopeful, and stutter-free

This is probably one of my favorites off the cd so far. Seems like it's about wanting to be on a certain drug with someone special and never wanting to be off the high. Lyrics can mean many different things to different people though and the chorus itself just makes me really happy due to my current situation.

Thanks again for posting these up!

It could be interpreted that way, but it's not condoning drugs at all.

I agree with Intrik about the chorus. Is great that you even attempted to write the lyrics as I really love this song. Is on repeat at the moment. I think it is just beautiful.

Lyrics are really subjective and I guess it is only the band knows what it is truly about, however, we can interpret it the way we want and the way I interpret it is this:

This song is about meeting someone you've met before and there is just a bond, they make you feel something that no-one else does, you can be yourself and the words come easily. The person in the song can "charm them all" but that does not matter because there is only one person that they truly love.

I just have something to add. Rather than 'bounced' I think it might be 'danced'. I'm not sure, what do others think?

Hi just a quick note, i believe most of this is right..

Hidden away in every locked toilet. I'lll be waiting for you in the Joiners' Arms.

I've danced with you

Silver slugs lined up like bullets

A pint and a fight, the dance floor is mine

I am hopeful, and stutter free

and when it runs out, we -buy- more

Apart from that I can't help! Sorry!

Joiners Arms might refer to a pub in east London or less likely the Southampton music venue.

The "when it runs out we buy more" sounds like a reference to whatever drug he's talking about. Would say alcohol but that comes in glasses ha.

Seriously my favorite song on the new CD! I think this song is about a relationship with someone so perfect for you that it's easy to just be yourself. So good!!
