The Sweet Escape Lyrics
(Woo-who, yee-who)
If I could escape
I would, but first of all let me say
I must apologize for acting, stinking, treating you this way
Cause I've been acting like sour milk fell on the floor
It's your fault you didn't shut the refrigerator
Maybe that's the reason I've been acting so cold
If I could escape
And re-create a place in my own world
And I could be your favorite girl
Forever, perfectly together
Now tell me boy, wouldn't that be sweet?
If I could be sweet
I know I've been a real bad girl
I didn't mean for you to get hurt
Forever, we can make it better
Now tell me boy, wouldn't that be sweet?
Sweet escape
(I wanna get away, to our sweet escape)
You let me down
I'm at my lowest boiling point
Come help me out
I need to get me out of this joint
Come on, let's bounce
Counting on you to turn me around
Instead of clowning around for some common ground
So baby, times getting a little crazy
I've been getting a little lazy
Waiting for you to come save me
I can see that you're angry
By the way the you treat me
Hopefully you don't leave me
Want to take you with me
If I could escape
And re-create a place in my own world
And I could be your favorite girl
Forever, perfectly together
Now tell me boy, wouldn't that be sweet?
If I could be sweet
I know I've been a real bad girl
I didn't mean for you to get hurt
Forever, we can make it better
Now tell me boy, wouldn't that be sweet?

It's such a dreamy song. I love it so much right now. I love the "I've been acting like sour milk all over the floor, it's your fault you didn't shut the refrigerator, maybe that's the reason I've been acting so cold." part - it's either insanely clever, or corny.
I think it's funny how people always assume the artist is writing about themselves!! I always thought that she was singing about how naive some girls can be when they get into relationships. I think she's saying that sometimes girls can fall out of reality and into the sweet escape fantasy land where everything will be perfect and it will work out forever (tell me boy now wouldn't that be sweet?). I also think its about the games we play trying to look innocent and bad at the same time and how we can sometimes get too dependent on the guy were with. Gwen herself is a pretty independent woman so that's why I think she would be writing about what i guessed! Could be wrong tho and this is my first comment!
LOOOOOOOOVVVVEEEEEEEEEEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! i heard this song when i first bought the album, when wind it up came out and i was in love with it straight away. i really am not sure of the meaning. i think i agree that shes trying to escape like, life or something but you can't really escape it. but at the same time, i think its about a relationship where she knows shes done things wrong, but she also is saying that its not just her fault, but its his as well. and also, shes saying to him it would be great if they cud escape, but she knows it wont happen. dunno, just my take on it. the film clip's alright i guess, but i dunno, it's kinda just the same as wind it up. love the little part with akon tho. :D:D:D:D six billion thumbs up to gwen tho, shes awesome.
One meaning might be about a guy and a girl (who always gets what she wants, "sour milk") that begin dating and she begins falling hard for him and expects him to feel the same. She then becomes "cold" with him because she interpreted his initial interest as him opening up his world (“leaving the refrigerator open”) but is still left on the “floor” (because this was not the case). For the first time in her life, she is on the deeper end on the scale of love and she realizes that his behaviour was not necessarily negative but it was her feelings and expectations that got her to act all “stank”.
“… recreate a place in my own world” may refer to her doing things over again in her fantasy world (or reality) and her winning his love by being his “favourite girl”. She is so stressed out over this guy (“I’m at my lowest point”) that she feels like she’s serving a sentence in jail and wants to escape (“I need to get me out of this joint”) and she still feels that he’s the answer to her “sweet escape”.
I don’t know, I might be way off but that’s my interpretation of the song. This reminds me of a girl that I went out with in the past.
Akon’s appearance is brilliant, great song though I really do not like the video.

Besides "woo-hoo, yee-hoo," he also says "I want to get away, get away / To our sweet escape, sweet escape / I want to get away, get away / yeah." But yes, that's about the extent of his contribution. He is also credited as a co-writer and producer, so I guess he has permission to stick himself in as a featured artist.
you guys are so deep. srsly
