Where do all the wrong lyrics come from? By ear?
Universe (surrounds you) When you're ready it waits (for us to) leave this earth. Come on, they're calling your name out... I don't know, I could stay or leave Either way, 'cause the comet can take us, all the way through...
Goodbye Safe, heaven, new I'll be waving, Goodbye Safe, heaven, new I'll be waving, goodbye
Return to see, everything looks the same I don't know if the change it made was grave, 'cause the craving remains the same
Goodbye Safe, heaven, new I'll be waving Goodbye Safe, heaven, new I'll be waving goodbye, I'll be waving... I'll be waving... Goodbye
Haha thank you, I've been going around and correcting other Deftones lyrics. This song reminds me of a game called System Shock 2, really would have fit into it.

@XCrusherX I thought it said "save heaven"...

Titles of works of artists give us many clues if you think about it. Book titles and song titles should follow the same logic. Xerces was a beautiful blue butterfly now gone forever. Never see this alive again. Heaven is repeated several times...but in the context of Universe (sung at the begining) this would seem to imply that all is lost with this life (Earth), that destruction (a comet) is on its way or one of many dooms facing us. We need to be brave "I dont know, I could stay or leave right away" leaves us to think that there is choice involved and saying good bye multiple times and ending with feels like a message of 'be brave' and follow me possibly. Therefore the mass extinction is a plausible idea as being perhaps a way to follow Xerces....Anybody knows how to ask the artists, then they usually dont know how there art pans out either! Fantastic song..breathtaking and the only ode suitable for the once beautiful butterfly. The song is permeated with sadness and rightly so.
the best verse, and also the one everyone seems to be getting wrong:
"Return, to see Everything looks the same. I don’t know If the change made was great, Cause the craving remains the same."
This song definitely has a tinge of depression in it, that feeling like nothing is worth it, you could stay or you could go and it wouldn't be any difference. I think the verse I mentioned earlier is the most significant because it refers to that feeling where you try to change your perspective and try to help yourself and make things better, but when you return, it's really all the same old shit and everything just looks the same, and you return to the same feelings you felt before and the same cravings you had before. It's about trying to change, but never fully being able to make it permanent.
Two people who feel the same amount of depression and talk about suicide alot and who help eachother out when each are feeling sad. They have a close friendship and they tell eachother everything, especially their troubles. They both are thinking of ending their lives and living their eternal lives with eachother. That's how I see it
Sounds like someone accepting that they're dieing.
2nd fav off of the new album.
Sounds like it might be about that group that committed mass suicide because they thought the passing comet would carry them quickly to the afterlife. I wouldn't be surprised, since Team Sleep's early song Kool Aid Party with Mike Patton was about another cult's mass death.
@CrimsonOGT I agree with this theory. Heaven's Gate was a cult who believed they could escape or bodies (vessels) and catch a ride in an alien spacecraft which was supposedly hidden behind Hale-Bop comet and bring them into heaven. The mention of heaven and comet in the song indicate this

I think your theory is correct.
'Goodbye, safe, heaven, new' is the line according to the booklet.
this is about when chino didn't know if he wanted to do another deftones record and also was very depressed and felt like dying.
Where'd you hear that?
