Overture Lyrics
It's wonderful what a smile can hide
If the teeth shine bright and it's nice and wide
It's so magical all you can keep inside
And if you bury it deep no one can find a thing, no
So come on now, open wide, open up now
Don't you think it's time
To look back at that boy on his way to school
Such a heavy heart, such a heavy jewel hiding Something that one day he'll sell
But now no one asks, no one tells a thing, no
So come on now, open wide, open up now
Don't you think it's time
Now after all these years you are at last opening was it
Worth all that war just to win
So caught up in the speed and the weight of your sin
Don't forget how the story begins
Don't forget now
Now I'm seeing all your lovers and enemies
They've been turning their keys so full of greed
All trying to seize that jewel you keep
What makes it shine, what makes it mine
Well I don't care, no
So come on now, open wide, open up now
Don't you think it's time
Now after all these tears you are at last opening
Was it worth all that war just to win
So caught up in the speed and the weight of your sin
Don't forget how your story begins
Dont forget now
Taking me back to where it begins
Before the speed and weight of your sin
Come on, Take me back to where it begins
Before the speed and weight of your sin
Come on, Take me back to where it begins now
Is it worth all this war just to win
Come on, Take me back to where it begins
Come on open wide, let some love in
If the teeth shine bright and it's nice and wide
It's so magical all you can keep inside
And if you bury it deep no one can find a thing, no
Don't you think it's time
Such a heavy heart, such a heavy jewel hiding Something that one day he'll sell
But now no one asks, no one tells a thing, no
Don't you think it's time
Worth all that war just to win
So caught up in the speed and the weight of your sin
Don't forget how the story begins
Don't forget now
They've been turning their keys so full of greed
All trying to seize that jewel you keep
What makes it shine, what makes it mine
Well I don't care, no
Don't you think it's time
Was it worth all that war just to win
So caught up in the speed and the weight of your sin
Don't forget how your story begins
Dont forget now
Before the speed and weight of your sin
Come on, Take me back to where it begins
Before the speed and weight of your sin
Come on, Take me back to where it begins now
Come on open wide, let some love in

I think it is the perfect bridge between his last album, and the new one. "Wind in the Wires" was all about escapism, and had a lot of surpression underneath it. Here, he starts out by saying "So come on now, open wide, open up now", almost as if he is egging on his past self. The voice he takes, as well as the title, reminds me of the Emmcee of a carnival outside a closed curtain, lecturing an audience before the show starts. This is consistent with the frantic bells and fair-ground noises on tracks like the "magic position". It is also pretty creepy, playing with the image of a dentist asking his patient to "open up", as well as the sexual connotations of the phrase, but ultimately, the opening to the beautiful, kinetic, demented, and redeeming world that this new album is.
Edited by evanreyes on April 30 2007, at 02:13AM

Best song ever to persuade introverts out of their shells. I'm starting to let some light in.
Great track. Bit of an anthem for me at present. To me it's about being who you are and what you are and letting that show.
I have heard him state somewhere, that with all the songs he sings to inspire joy and confidence in people, this one he sings to himself.
It is a perfect opener for his show, I went to his show without knowing his songs, and this one won me over in a beat of its heartbeat rhythm.
I also think, that it is a great love to have arrived at when you are giving freely and openly for anyone to take that might need it, with irrational faith in your renewing strenght. And just as important, passing on and taking back just as a matter of course. To be truly open. Love without a possessive purpose or claim, just for the sake of it. Well, and if not between two people, then between him-on-stage and all he represents for me and my humble and ever-so-thankful inspired self and everyone else in our little energy circle... Okay, now I made myself laugh, whatever;)
Together with Paris this never ceases to save me.
it makes my heart explode with pure joy!!
Make that two. :)
