Baby's Romance Lyrics

The baby's sleeping in the crib up top
And baby's sleeping above you
You will lift him to the parking lot
Your car is waiting there for you
Your car is waiting there for you

I would like to see a little more propriety,
Cooperate with me and answer me
Without a plea.

I know now, I know now, I know now,
I'm gonna tell on you.
I know now, I know now, I know now,
I'm never gonna tell on you.

The whiskey's waiting on the fire top,
The baby's going to drink too.
The lady's got no clothes she's at the shop.
But if she'd knew then she'd kill you.
The bugs are out cause they come out at night,
Usually they just bite our hands.
Cause normally we have clothes on without a fight,
But now fighting's a part of baby's romance.
But now fighting's a part of baby's romance.

I would like to see a little more propriety,
Cooperate with me and answer me
Without a plea.

I know now, I know now, I know now,
I'm gonna tell on you.
I know now, I know now, I know now,
I'm never gonna tell on you.

Baby sleeps I can scrape your flower pots.
And baby's sleeping against you.
I think he'd pray for an old motor car.
Or any bed made without you.
Or any bed made without you.

I would like to see a little more propriety,
Cooperate with me and answer me
Without a plea.
I would like to see a little more propriety,
Cooperate with me and answer me
Without a plea.

I think the line says "Baby's sleeping against graveyard flower pots" not "Baby sleeps I can scrape your flower pots". But perhaps its just me who noticed that.

Actually this song is about molestation. Rececntly Chris was in a gay podcast (feastoffools.net if anyone is interested in listening to it). He sang this song and explained this is a song about sexual abuse he went through as a child. The part of the song "I know now..." means he was going to keep this a secret. If you read the lyrics with this in mind, it makes sense.

It's "the ladys' got no clue she's at the shop" and, "the baby sleeps against graveyard flower pots, the baby's sleeping up against you, i'd think he'd prefer an old motel cot"

this is indeed about the man who molested Chris as a child. he has since filed charges against the man and there was a court trial in 2005 before this album was recorded (he wrote this when he was 16) so he has in fact, told on the man, as he said he would not in the song

Chris said it was to potect other children he felt were in harms way around the man

No comments!?! that's crazy this has to be my second favorite song on the album, next to Castle-Time

Yeah i have no idea what it means i just like it when he sings "i know now i know now i know, i am never gonna tell on you"

i think "baby" is symbolizing a young girl struggeling with realtionship and herself with the whisky and sloth.

@aliciasaidso it’s about molestation

well, it says you will lift HIM to the parking lot. so i dont know.

Chris's lyric arent always so cryptic. sometimes its more obvious than it appears.

To me, it sounds like the story of an affair bewteen a married man (who has a baby) and another man or woman. They meet when the wife is out. The unmarried party to the affair is unimpressed with dad's behavior ("I would like to see a little more propriety") and wants to expose the secret relatioship, but probably won't (tell on you/never tell on you). That's the feeling I get, anyways.

@LosDigits it’s about chris getting molested

i think this song/the whole album is about growing up in a home with an alcoholic parent or parents, and trying to protect a younger sibling or child. i think this song is beautifully written and full of pain and conflict. it sounds like he's with someone whos doing the wrong thing, but he's too close to ever "tell on you."

@efranke1 it’s about chris getting molested

xne, I listened to the podcast but didn't catch the part about molestation. But now that you've said it, the lines "I would like to see a little more propriety, Cooperate with me and answer me Without a plea." Sound like something a judge would say to someone.
