Tear By Tear Lyrics
We all know sadness
And I feel your pain
Well everybody knows a little loneliness sometimes
'Cause we're all the same
We all have sorrow
We all have shame
Everybody feels a bitter emptiness sometimes
Now what you gonna do about that?
There's a way to keep going
Step by step
Try to fix what's been broken
Brick by brick
While your life will keep coming
Year after year
You drain the pain
Tear by tear
You drain away the pain
Tear by tear
Take a look around you
Every face that you see
Well everybody gets a little paralyzed sometimes
The epidemic of our insanity
There's a way to keep going
Step by step
Try to fix what's been broken
Brick by brick
While your life will keep coming
Year after year
You drain the pain
Tear by tear
You drain away the pain
Tear by tear
And the mother she waits
'Cause her teenager's late
Till the knock on the door
He says ma'am I am so sorry
And soldiers come home
One leg less than they'd gone with
We all walk around like there's just nothing wrong with it
The doctor he cries 'cause his last patient died
Did I mention before he was a father of five?
And the waitress is home
Well she can't pay her loan
She's lost everything - everything
Has no where to go
And the fat kid at school couldn't take any more
All the taunts and the names and the ugliest words
No one even stopped to notice
Went on with their day
Till he pulled out a gun and blew himself away
There's a way to keep going
Step by step
Try to fix what's been broken
Brick by brick
You can drain all the pain
Tear by tear
Tear by tear
And I feel your pain
Well everybody knows a little loneliness sometimes

i can't believe no one wrote about this song.
Man this song is sad.... awesome awesomeness
what a great song, very sad. it's quite obvious what sister hazel is trying to say here. they're trying to say that everyone has pain and it can be fixed if people stop being so ignorant to the problems present in society until something horrible happens. great song, great cd, great band.
Yes, the message is about empathy for those in need; yet the song also praises those who take responsibility for their own happiness. So there seem to be two ways we can reduce "pain" in our society. Those who have it need to not give up. And those who can should feel obligated to let those in pain know that they aren't alone.
does nobody else get the feeling that the message of the song is that no matter how hard you think things are, you're not alone and that its ok to cry because people will be crying with you.
Agreement with all above comments, really.
People ignore the pain of other people until it's too late; this could be fixed if we paid attention, and realized that it's okay to cry and mourn because we're never alone no matter how cold the world seems.
I absolutely, absolutely, ABSOLUTELY (no album pun intended) love the lines "And the fat kid at school- couldn't take anymore, All the taunts and the names and the ugliest words, No-one even stopped to notice, they went on with their day 'Till he pulled out a gun and blew himself away..."
We are ASSHOLES, in general, until it's far too late to realize what we've done-- in this case, until somebody is dead thanks to people not caring-- in fact, not only not caring, but attacking him and ignoring his pain until there's a bullet through his head.
It's such an insanely sad song, but it's doubtlessly one of my favorites on the album and by the band in general.
