Requiem Lyrics

Well he stomped with his feet
And he clapped with his hands
He summoned all of his joy when he laughed
It suffered all of his joy when he cried

And sometimes when he got into talking
Man he could rattle on and on
He was a good man and now he's gone

Well in war he was a tiger
When it was over like a dove
He summoned all of his strength in the climb
It suffered all of his strength in the fall

Sometimes when he got into fighting
Man he could fight with you all day long
He was a good man, and now he's gone

He put his trust in a higher power
He held his power like a holy grail
He summoned all of his faith in the lifting
It suffered all of his faith if he failed

His heart was stronger than a heavy metal bullet
And that's why I dedicate this song
He was a good man and now he's gone

His heart was stronger than a heavy metal bullet
And that's why I dedicate this song
He was a good man and now he's gone

this song makes me think of a grandfather who served in a World War, someone who likes to tell his stories, share his kindness not expecting anything in return, and hold his grandchildren on his lap, maybe sit in a big comfortable chair and smoke his pipe, a man who is old and wrinkled and stubborn as heck but very lovable...what a nice man.

that's the best interpretation i've seen on this site, or anywhere for that matter.

I've got to agree with yellowinmymind, and just to add, the man must have been very opinionated with a strong character. Passionate in everything he did, you know...somebody that truly affected a person.

Although, the fifth paragraph, last line should read "it suffered all of his faith if he failed."

I agree, that is a great translation. But I was thinking the song is more about a friend of his that went to war and died because the lyrics make it seem like he's singing about a friend rather than a grandfather.

This song reminds me of Clint Eastwood's character in Gran Torino.

so no one's dug up the true identity of who this was written for?
