Ruth Marie Lyrics

I grew so old in that house I lived in
They brought me here 'cause I can't take care
I lost my worth and my purpose here
I feel you cry, but I can't speak my mind
Will you hold me and never let me go?
'Cause I hated when you walk outside that door
'Cause I know I won't ever see your eyes
The eyes I gave you

When my eyes shut, they'll take me to the land
For fifty years I lived there with my man
And on my own, I lived for forty more
I watched you grow up from babies on the floor
To the beautiful women that you are
And I hated that you've gone away so far
'Cause I know I won't ever see those eyes
The eyes I gave you

The evenings fall, they'll drag me out the hall
Up to my bunk and drug me 'til I'm numb
But pass the haze, I see your pretty face
Remember me when I'm gone
You know I love you, though I can hardly say
And I hate it when you see me in this way
But in darkness, I'll always see those eyes
The eyes I gave you

The idea I get from this song is that its about a older woman with dementia/alzheimer's. Shes been moved to a care home as she can't care for herself anymore "They brought me here 'cause I can't take care"

The old woman hates people leaving but she will forget them so it will be like the last time she see's them. But looking into their eyes is the only thing that brings back memories. "'Cause I hated when you walk outside that door 'Cause I know I won't ever see your eyes"

When it talks about how she hates how people are 'gone away so far' this is because she has lost her mind and memories, they have disappeared from her mind.

Just my thoughts!

My Interpretation

@guyg I believe your interpretation is 100% right on. Our family has watched my mother-in-law slide further away from the life she worked so hard to build. It's especially hard on the daughters (my wife), wrestling with what might be in the future for them (us). Thanks for your words guyg...Peace

Great song very sad makes me think of my mother. What i get from the song is that the woman is dying she's been taken to the hospital and one (or all of) her daughters is there with her she doesn't want them to leave cause she knows its the last time she will see her. It goes one to describe how sad she was when they all moved away so far away

This guy claims this is the saddest song ever written:

I think about that question a lot, and I can't disagree. It murders me every time and never loses its power.
