Dead Man's Will Lyrics
Give this stone to my brother
Because we found it playing in the barnyard
Many years ago
Give this bone to my father
He'll remember hunting in the hills
When I was ten years old
May my love reach you all
I lost it in myself and buried too long
Now that I come to fall
Please say it's not too late
Now that I'm dead and gone
Give this string to my mother
It pulled the baby teeth
She keeps inside the drawer
Give this ring to my lover
I was scared and stupid not to ask
For her hand long before
May my love reach you all
I lost it in myself and buried too long
Now that I come to fall
Please say it's not too late
Now that I'm dead and gone
Because we found it playing in the barnyard
Many years ago
He'll remember hunting in the hills
When I was ten years old
I lost it in myself and buried too long
Now that I come to fall
Please say it's not too late
Now that I'm dead and gone
It pulled the baby teeth
She keeps inside the drawer
I was scared and stupid not to ask
For her hand long before
I lost it in myself and buried too long
Now that I come to fall
Please say it's not too late
Now that I'm dead and gone

The song title is pretty self-explanatory...This is a dead man's will...he's telling the individual people what to take and why...It's such a beautiful song and just the idea of it's meaning and why he wrote it...He's confessing his love for everyone after his death, because maybe he was too scared and stupid not to when he was alive, as he was to ask for his love's hand in marriage...so good...CKress
It made me think of what are the things I will tell before I leave this life.
I love this song!! It's very straightforward in its meaning, but all of the real starkness and regret of it come through in the listening. Sam really adds a lot of depth to the song when he plays it. It reminds me of a book I read by William Faulkner called "As I Lay Dying". The book's about a dead women and her trip to the family burial plot and part of the book is actually narrated by the dead women, Addie. It's innovative and strikes the same kind of chord as this song. If you like this song and you like the idea of this song, I'd recommend reading "As I Lay Dying" (http://www.scribd.com/doc/14343079/As-I-Lay-Dying)
I always lose it at "give this ring..."
i was too scared and stupid to make the girl i love my girlfriend for a long time. I won't make that same mistake when it's time for her to be my wife.
Beyond the self-explanatory side of this song, I think it also conveys that it is the little things in life that you will most remember about someone; A stone found on a barnyard while playing with your brother, or a bone from when you went hunting with your father, a simple string from when you had a baby tooth pulled out.
These little, insignificant objects are actually links to the memories of simple times spent with those you love.
I fear that I've become the person narrating this song. I'm so bitter and reserved that I don't tell the ones that really matter how much I truly love them. What a shame.
