"If you find me, hide me, I don't know where I've been" i think that line implies that if her long-distance lover is ever to find her, he should hide her, maybe because of infidelity she took part in out of the loneliness long-distance dating brings.

to staticanonymity: no wonder she isn't famous, she has talent. i know that i shouldn't be saying that since there are talented, famous people somewhere out there, but the majority are the opposite.

I think that here she's sings about someone she loves who doesn't love her back and even though being in that situation kills her she would rather be with someone who doesn't love her thn sleep alone...

It's about the opportunity cost of a relationship, rather than the successful musical career she has. In this song, she pretty much states that she'd be willing to give up her career if it meant having love, or "Rather give the world away than wake up lonely". She sort of swings back and forth, though, and realizes there's no way she can have both. Long distance relationships don't work. In an interview, Haines said this:

“It seems sometimes so discouraging, like it will never work in any situation. [Long distance relationships] don’t work and it also doesn’t work to have a relationship with someone who’s also a musician, ‘cause you’re too wrapped up in each other’s shit and you never get out of it.”

The title is somewhat explanatory. It eludes to her career and the fact that she almost wishes it would end. I don't personally see any truth to the "kids" thing, but I'm not going to shoot it down. Really great song, by the by. I really love this album, and this song especially.

I'm almost positive this was written right after her father died, and so it's about him. note the "not for a fuck or a kiss" bit. and also, "all the babies tucked away in their beds..." bit is like how while other people are still sheltered and have their parents, she doesn't have that protection anymore, and is left out in the cold screaming.

Didn't she write this song shortly after the death of her father? I think it could have to do with a family situation: "Cursed with a love that you can't express" Could be talking about a family member, specifically her father, as perhaps her and her father were very close but did not 'openly' express their love or physically say "I love you" "It's not for a fuck, or a kiss" Would resemble the fact that its not an "intimate love" as it is a love between a family member. "Rather give the world away than wake up lonely Everywhere and every way I see you with me" Could represent that she regrets focusing so much on her career and "world" than spending more time with him and now that he has passed she feels his presence. "When you phone me tell me everything I did If I'm sorry you lost me you'd better make it quick Cause this call costs a fortune and it's late where you live" This part could represent perhaps the last time she spoke to her father perhaps he was telling her how he was proud of her 'telling her everything she did' and she was probably on tour meaning she was far from him and the long distance call between maybe even different countries was expensive but now she regrets 'making it quick' because she'd give anything to be able to hear him on the phone again.

I think the idea that it could be about Emily's father, Paul Haines, is a good one. For one, the cover art for 'Knives Don't Have Your Back' is based on that for Paul Haines' opera 'Escalator Over The Hill' so it's obvious that despite the fact he died 3 years before Emily's album was realised, he had a profound effect on her musically.

'Cursed with a love that you can't express It's not for a fuck, or a kiss' - Can we entirely express why we love our parents? I don't think the idea of a long-distance relationship works here, because yes being in love is higher than the physical side but these lyrics seem to suggest no physical side at all, therefore making it possible for the love to be familial.

'Everywhere and every way I see you with me' - She still misses him.

I think the musical references, while possibly pointing towards choosing between a relationship and a musical career, could also be a nod to her father as a musician. It was he, after all who would make cassettes of rare and eclectic music for Emily to listen to. She ties them in with hints of suicide with 'Land out on the ice' because his death makes her want to join him.

'The life that you thought through is gone' - This just seems to be an obvious reference to death to me. Everything her father lived and worked for has gone with him and maybe there's some bitterness on Emily's part for this.

I think it's about the desolate nature of life in general, and how painful it is to be alone in a world so full of people. It doesn't matter what you have on the surface, when what you really long for is the touch, the love, the companionship of another.

i thought this song was about a long-distance relationship since the first time i heard it.

the first verse is about the absence on a physical relationship ("cursed with a love that you can't express, it's not for a fuck, or a kiss"). and obviously, the phone-call has to do with distance ("this call costs a fortune and it's late where you live"). waking up lonely and seeing the person with her both have to do with missing somebody. that's my take on it.

p.s. i think it's okay for people to have DIFFERENT interpretations whether they are 'correct' or 'incorrect,' perception is a wonderful thing :).
