Caroline Lyrics
They say you were born in St. Claire's hospital
I say you were born up in the sky
You come floating down over New Orleans
To the sweet green levee on the river side
And your voice chirped like old squeaky shoes
And momma always said we had nothing to lose
And so we danced on the street corner
Oh Caroline
(Round) Caroline
Heartbroken hard times, they never got us down
Walking the same line through every single southern town
Hand in hand your arm around mine
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline
(Round) Caroline
I seen it all change, watch it change some more
Seen hard times standing right outside your door
Tell me, gal, what's on your mind
Oh Caroline
We were the Cardinals' biggest fans
Turning flips like Ozzy Smith all through the night
Until we got traded away
To the Red Clay Southern League up on the Georgia line
You be the pitcher and the catcher too
I'm the home run king before his muscles grew
Gonna knock the cover off this time
Oh Caroline
(Round) Caroline
Heartbroken hard times, they never got us down
Walking the same line through every single southern town
Hand in hand your arm around mine
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline
(Round) Caroline
I seen it all change, watch it change some more
Seen hard times standing right outside your door
Tell me, gal, what's on your mind
Oh Caroline
These are different days
And the pace of the world has us thinking there's no time
To turn the other way
Take my hand and we'll walk on down the line
Though we may be a thousand miles apart
A brother and a sister have a single heart
And the beat don't stop for nothing
Oh Caroline
(Round) Caroline
Heartbroken hard times, they never got us down
Walking the same line through every single southern town
Hand in hand your arm around mine
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline
(Round) Caroline
I seen it all change, watch it change some more
Seen hard times standing right outside your door

i love this song, i love old crow medicine show, and i reeeeally really really love the st.louis cardinals.
"I’m the home run king before his muscles grew."
i think thats about mark mcguire.
amazing song, reminds you of how life changes as do our relationships to friends and family. Sometimes the memeories of the past is all we've got left.
Ozzy Smith was a hall of famer with the Cardinals.
On Tennessee Pusher, the second verse is a bit different than what's listed above. Also, the last verse up above is not included on that CD. Here's how the second half of the song is on TP:
We were the gas house gang I'll be Ozzie Smith, you'll be Sarah my wife Til' we got traded away To the Red Clay league somewhere along the Georgia line You be the pitcher and the catcher too I'm the home run king 'fore his muscles grew Gonna knock the cover off this time.
Oh Caroline (Round) Caroline Oh Caroline (Round) Caroline Oh Caroline (Round) Caroline (can't remember how many times this repeats...)
In some versions of the song they the following verse to the end:
I called you the other day It sounded like you'd been up all night cryin' I used to wonder if we Had really run away would they discover where we were hidin' But there ain't no way we could be so free As we were back in '83 So what's the use in even try'n?
This song is about lost innocence and a brother's love for his sister. The narrator reminisces about growing-up with his sister in the South, and laments that the world is no longer as simple as it was when they were children. Although times have changed for him and his sister, they take comfort in the fact that they still have each other and their memories.
