Wolf Am I! (And Shadow) Lyrics

It's the smell of hot summertime trash
It's the city noise of a busy street
It's a train derailed and two car head-on freeway crash each time we meet
"And if it comes as some sort of surprise," she said
"That I seem so composed
I've kept this moment closer to my eyes," she said
"Than the glasses resting on the edge of my nose"

Shadow am I!
A question of a person, no said reply
Wolf am I!
And shadow cast on the sheep as I pass by
Shadow am I, or like a
Wearing-black-socks-and-white-woolen-locks
Wolf am I, and shadow

She was graceful and green as a stem
But I walk heavy on delicate ground
(Oh, there I go, showing off again
Self-impressed by how well I can put myself down!
And there I go again, to the next further removed level
Of that same exact feigned humility!)

(And this for me goes on and on to the point of nausea)

Shadow am I!
Like a suspicion that's never confirmed
But it's never denied
Wolf am I!
(No, "shadow" I think is better
As I'm not something
More like the absence of something)
So shadow am I!
The whole material world seems to me
Like a newspaper headline
It explicitly demands your attention
And it may even contain some truth
But what's really going on here?

One day the water's going to wash it away
One day the water's going to wash it away
One day the water's going to wash it away
And on that day

One day the water's going to wash it away
One day the water's going to wash it away
One day the water's going to wash it away
Nothing clever to say
One day
Nothing else to say

"white woolen locks" "Ego goes on and on"

quite frankly I don't know why you'd even attempt these lyrics they're too hard to even have gotten close to what they are correct. THis is one of my favorites on the album. Also try to hear sheep, or anything referencing one, during the "Chorus" and build around that, as Sheep and Wolf is prominent in this.

This is one of my least favorites on the album, actually. Which isn't to say it's bad.. just doesn't stand out to me. The beginning sounds like a rock-out part of a muse song.

Overall, I like it. The lyrics are pretty neat from what I can tell.

I can see this as being a single, it's really fun, it's got a great hook etc. plus it's really short yet sweet. Great song.

Maybe this song is about how you feel invisible to the world because your beliefs seem so much more different.

This song to me seems to be talking of struggles with faith and material things. He doesn't feel real- he doesn't feel like he goes in with the sheep (the saved)- in fact, he feels like he is a wolf in sheep's clothing, so to speak. This may be due to his inability to convert someone important in his life (the first portion of the song especially seems to tell this to me). So he feels like he lacks the faith required. But in the end he knows that eventually all will be well, and on that day he won't have any clever things to say. What do you guys think?

identity. wolves and shadows are really appealing (dark, mysterious, stealthy) nouns, and it's even more appealing to pose as or become either. shadow just happens to be the narrator's choice in the end, despite it's cool factor: he is only an identity after these declarations, but he was even worse off before.

what's really going on here? what's in his head, what matters in how he portrays himself.

one day's the outer world's going to wash his feigned humility, his created identity away, revealing the nothing he began with.

the first verse defines what matters in that outer, a clue the narrator knew he should have paid attention to before. the 'it'.

I like the part: "No, "Shadow" I think is better, as I'm not so much something as the absence of something."

I know what you mean about this song not being quite like the others. When he introduced this song he claimed the drummer wrote it (explaining the rock-out part of the song, maybe?) but this also might explain the lyrics, so they might be the drummer's words instead of the singers... though this would be a feeling Aaron might have, I wouldn't think he'd have expressed it this way, given every other mewithoutYou song out there. But, as far as drummers writing songs goes, this song is pretty damn good.

i get the sense that he's talking about the carnal nature vs the spiritual nature. like our identity in the world and then our identity in christ and how we have to choose between them and what they both represent.
