Q&A
I Can Hear The Laughs Lyrics
You can really fall,
wake up in a ruined house,
wrapped up in a torn-down curtain.
And when I get to hell
will the lovely girls come down
to the banks of that red, red river?
I can hear the laughs
when they find I've fallen down again.
I can hear the laughs
and it hurts so bad I have to smile.
You can take a lot,
put back not a thing,
still come home looking thinner.
And when I get to Oz
will the lovely witch come down,
kiss my pale, bleeding brow?
I can hear the laughs
when they find I've fallen down again.
I can hear the laughs
and it hurts so bad I have to smile.
wake up in a ruined house,
wrapped up in a torn-down curtain.
will the lovely girls come down
to the banks of that red, red river?
when they find I've fallen down again.
I can hear the laughs
and it hurts so bad I have to smile.
put back not a thing,
still come home looking thinner.
will the lovely witch come down,
kiss my pale, bleeding brow?
when they find I've fallen down again.
I can hear the laughs
and it hurts so bad I have to smile.

I'm not really sure what this song means but i like it alot. I guess it means when things get so bad that you just can't sink any further, that all that piled up bad luck finally makes you smile. Its like ultimately getting shat on. Freedy Johnston rules
Wow, I posted it and it immediately gets a comment! I don't really get it either. I think it's about how you can get to rock bottom and nothing you do makes it any better ("you can take a lot... still come home looking thinner.") The lines "will the lovely witch come down/kiss my pale, bleeding brow" make me really sad. I think they're about wanting to be loved/appreciated for your hard work and pain.
This song is about being scorned and laughed at by others for issues you're struggling to control and covering up the pain by acting happy as if it doesn't bother you ("and it hurts so bad I have to smile").
In the first verse, the problem is some form of substance abuse and in the second, the problem is being overweight.
I like how the happy melody is in stark contrast to the song's content - a fitting ending to a great album.
