I think this is from the beginning of him and his wife's relationship. After his whole long relationship and horrible break up with his old girlfriend, he's afraid of falling in love again. This song is so well articulated though. Other songs about similar topics are shit and really self pitying. This one's really sweet.
what it means to me is that, someone doesnt want to say their in love because it might cause hurt if the other doesnt love them, but their feelings are so strong that "like" doesnt cover it. those are my feelings on the song anyways, its a wonderful song, Beck is a genius.
Beck is amazing
It's the fact that he's in love with a girl, but he knows that the feeling has to be requited for it to TRULY mean he's in love. He knows if he says he's in love TOO early that it could scare her off, and she may never come back. But he also knows that if he says that he's in love that she might understand his feelings a lot better, and she may feel exactly the same to him. Very relevant to me on certain occasions.
