The Longest Day Lyrics
In the gloom the gathering storm abates
In the ships gimlet eyes await
The call to arms to hammer at the gates
To blow them wide throw evil to its fate
All summers long the drills to build the machine
To turn men from flesh and blood to steel
From paper soldiers to bodies on the beach
From summer sands to armageddon's reach
Overlord, your master not your god
The enemy coast dawning grey with scud
These wretched souls puking, shaking fear
To take a bullet for those who sent them here
The world's alight, the cliffs erupt in flame
No escape, remorseless shrapnel rains
Drowning men no chance for a warrior's fate
A choking death enter hell's gate
Sliding we go, only fear on our side
To the edge of the wire,
and we rush with the tide
Oh the water is red,
with the blood of the dead
But I'm still alive, pray to God I survive
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
How long on this longest day
'Til we finally make it through
The rising dead, faces bloated torn
They are relieved, the living wait their turn
Your number's up, the bullet's got your name
You still go on, to hell and back again
Valhalla waits, valkyries rise and fall
The warrior tombs, lie open for us all
A ghostly hand reaches through the veil
Blood and sand, we will prevail
Sliding we go, only fear on our side
To the edge of the wire,
and we rush with the tide
Oh the water is red,
with the blood of the dead
But I'm still alive, pray to God I survive
How long on this longest day

Hello everyone. Like all of you I am a great Iron fan and fully appreciate their work and talent. Personally I believe most of you miss the point of the maiden war songs. The dont care of expressing a political judgement or view but narrate facts from a distant point of view, with no feeling at all. They are emotionless because that is how the world is. Man has no sentiment for suffering and killing. People are sent to war as if it were normal and maiden completely reflect this. Man has lost all of his charity and the only thing that remains is his ego and individuality. His fears accompany him thoughout his struggle and give him support, the support needed to die and be forgotten.. This is what iron maiden war songs are about. No hitlers or heroes. Just individual souls who die for no reason, because like Nietzsche said, when God was killed, Reason went along with Him.... All of these themes (fear your only compagnion, lack of heroes, isolation, being forgotten) are all present in the list of war songs by maiden. If war song revolve around there themes, how can they be political?
War has been an ivention of mankind since the dawn of time. Be it the old days of the caveman fighting for food to survive with primitive weapons, Or modern-day warfare with new and improved technology of the 21st century. I am not anti-war only for a few reasons. Now I am throughly against violence in any way, But only if it is for unintelligible reasons. If it was a half-way sensible war like WW2 against Adolph Hitler. Then we needed to wage war on hitler because he possessed too much power. He was intelligent ( And no I am not defending the man I am american ) However he used his intellect for an unrighteous cause and slaughtered innocent lives across the planet. Anyone ever seen the Punisher movie? " If you want peace, Prepare for war " Unless all humans develop their kindhearted side more througly then war will continue to plauge mankind for the rest of eternity. But of course that is just an opinion. Feel free to correct me anytime.
Awesome song. It really speaks to the horrors and the sacrifices of the soldiers in the wars. They are taking bullets for the people who sent them there. It's as if the politicians who send the soldiers to war are using them as a renewable resource, replacing them with new ones as they get killed. As Bruce said it: War is bullshit.
I know you guys will get pissed off at this, but this song does portray war in a negative way, as do all of Maiden's war songs (with the exception of "These Colours Don't Run"). There really aren't any good things in war.
D-Day, Normandie, 1944... Great lyrics! And the music really captures the feeling of war in a way only Paschendale has done before! 21st November anyone?!!:D
maiden are THE metal band
ive gotta say them and priest have been the most consistent throughout the years, this song rules my only complaint is the repetitive chorus,i like the pre chorus though
UP THE IRONS!
well I know for a fact looking at the behind the scenes "a matter of life or death" they clearly state they are just observers they are not stating opinions. It just pisses me off when people always think songs about war are negative and anti-war.
That'd be soooo funny and awesome if Bruce said that, it'd just make me like hime more
Concerning war and Maiden. I really would like to see "Sabaton" touring with Maiden, warming up the audience for Maiden.
http://www.sabaton.net/index2.htm
Sabaton got almost only war songs (about modern wars: 6 days war, the Falklands, Iraq2, WWI/II, Bosnia, etc), but still with much balance in their opinion, in similarity to Maiden.
hmmm sounds good
