I think this was the pilgrims belief that the church of England was going to hell with corruption and such so they bid farewell and came to america

The crusade belief probaly arose from the second verse (however seemed to overlook the word eternal). Not to say your enterpretation is not plausable, however I still firmly retain my own, while knowing a hell of alot more about history than you.
