If our words were once sweethearts, now they're ugly violent thugs
How did our language come to this, we speak in grunts and sighs and shrugs
When we never used to let just one spare moment go to waste
Now you're hardly ever here, and when you are you're bored and chaste

So when did you decide that I was vile
I've tried and tried to talk, but talking's never been your style

You say you think we'll still be friends, but we both know that we won't
And your mates all laugh and smile as if they know something I don't
And every night a taxi softly sneaks you up our street
You used to say you'd broke your phone, now you don't care if you're discreet

So why won't you just tell me who was there
There's a buzz about you now, there's something funny in the air

If there's no hope for us then there's no hope for anyone
What chance can they have, if even you and me just can't have fun
Was it so long ago our friends said we were disgraceful
But how could they ever know that we could be so unfaithful

You weren't wearing much of note
just hold-ups and your long grey coat
The electric fire lit up our skin as we whispered
cause your mum was in
And mind we went to use the phone
And let the pervert see how he could only hope to be

But that was in the haze of new romance
When we floated hand in hand right through its vague, deceitful trance

If there's no hope for us then there's no hope for anyone
What chance can they have, if even you and me just can't have fun
Was it so long ago our friends said we were disgraceful
How could they have ever known that we could be so unfaithful

That's me then, I'm all packed, you know I need some time to think
You just take what you think you'll need, I think we both might need a drink
And all the secrets that I keep, you know I keep because I care
But now there's no hope left for us, well darling let's just leave it there

It's definitely about the breakdown of a relationship. The couple mentioned used to seem unstoppable and very much in love, which for me is the darkest bit of this song. The speaker is musing over how such a wonderful period of time could go so wrong. She cheats on him and initially lies about it but it gets to a point where neither of them cares and chances are he cheats as well.

I really like the female vocals in the last two stanzas. The voices really contrast.

"If there's no hope for use then there's no hope for anyone"

The melody of this line reminds me of some other song... Could someone help me out?

There's another version of this song labeled the "Rogue Version on the album Ten Years of Tears. The lyrics are slightly different, this is the best I could make them out:

If once the words were lovers now they're ugly violent thugs how did our language get so basic we speak in grunts and sighs and shrugs when it used to be we'd never let our spare time go to waste but now i'm just a fuckin bully and you're so bored you're always chaste

and i wonder when it was when you decided i was vile i've tried and tried to talk but talkings never been your style

and every night a taxi softly sneaks you up our street you used to say you broke your mobile but you dont care if you're descreet

(If there's no hope for use then there's no hope for anyone)

    do you remember

You weren't wearing much of note Just hold-ups and your long white coat electric fire lit up your skin as we whipsered because your mum was in And then we went to use the phone We noticed that we weren't alone We shrugged and let the pervert see What he could only hope to be

If there's no hope for use then there's no hope for anyone What chance can they have if even you and me can't have fun? Was it so long ago our friends called us disgraceful But could they ever know that we could be so unfaithful

That's me, I'm all packed you know I need some time to think you keep what you need, I think we both need a drink The secrets I keep, I keep cause I care But there's no hope left for us, so let's just leave it there.

I like this version better than the original song found on The Last Romance.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
