I'm sitting by a lake
But it's not of this earth
The water is so clear
And the birds are alive
A mirror for the sky
Only see themselves and fly away

I'm sitting by a lake
(The universe is alive)
I lay down by the river-flow
(It's a river of stars)
I'm living by the ocean
(It's an ocean of light)
How do you call this place around?
(It's a world that I once saw in a dream)

Will you please tell me now
(If I'm dead or alive?)
Landscapes so bright, all around
(It's a city of light)
Where, who, when, why?
(I think, therefore I am)
I feel like I know this land
(But this must be so far away)

This world is life
There's clouds-and-wonders
It's all I need and it will never go
You say it's lost, I don't believe it
This is my vision, we can never know

This is the earth, but ages after
I know the world will overcome its pain
The simple fact, I dream about it
Already makes it happen in the rain

It's right in front
But you don't face it
I'm dedicated, all my life in me
And made of light, our sun is growing
Like in the heart of some of us I pray

And by the lynch, you will discover
This form of life is not the only one
I want the truth and I just knew it
And now I know the vision came alive

I think this is about how he had a dream of a world that was clean and alive, unlink what ours is turning out to be, and he is convinced that we can make this world like the dream.

There is one big punch line that gave me the meaning of this song straight away (from my perspective). "I think, therefore I am". This is the most known line in philosophy, written by Descartes (original is "I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am"). It's the evidence for existence. Even more, it's the only undoubtful evidence you can have in life. In this song, Gojira sings about another world, but an unknown world. They question the world in many ways, as they don't know what it is. They say they see it in a dream, but also in a vision that shows future. They think it's not real, as wel as they question there own being in this very place. Descartes' line gives hereby the evidence that our own vision of reality can't be accepted as false. But also that this vision can't be accepted as true. The world we live in can be questioned. But the fact that you think, gives you evidence for your OWN realism. As Gojira asks in the song, "Am I dead or alive". The answer is, your mind might be in another "reality". It might be life, death, a dream, a simulation, hell, heaven or even being on drugs. But not the idea of not being alive. Because we're always in our own reality. We're always alive in ourselves.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
