Policeman's Xmas Party Lyrics
Welcome to the first day of the rest of my life
The tension is so thick you can cut it with a knife
Something happened... Things will never be the same
There's blood on the carpet - I'm rewiring my brain
I got some new friends at West Valley PD
You can change the channel but I'm all that's on TV
The only good news is that he's going to be ok
Got a bomb in my stomach but I'm dreaming that one day
I'll be going to a Policeman's Xmas party
Have a couple beers get funky on the dance floor
Going to a Policeman's Xmas Party
Gonna have a good time for the rest of my life...
4 weeks later it's still Raining in the Park
Marine with a gun guards my house now after dark
I look for clues like I'm Inspector Clouseau
You can have my money honey I just want to go
Go to a Policeman's Xmas party
Have a couple beers get my funky on the dance floor
Go to a Policeman's Xmas Party
Gonna have a good time for the rest of my life...
There's Cops on the ceiling
There's Cops on the floor
There's Cops in the windows
Cops breaking down the door
You'll never feel safer in your life
The Captain even likes to get freaky with my wife
We're going to a Policeman's Xmas party
Have a couple beers get my funky on the dance floor
Go to a Policeman's Xmas Party
Gonna have a good time for the rest...
Welcome to the best day of the rest of my life
My buddies broke the case and now it's gonna be alright
Moral of the story, it don't matter who you are
Be careful what you wish for they'll be calling you a rock star
People from Earth there's never been a harder core
Party like this party in a million years or more
The floor itself is hopping like a freaking kangaroo
The DJ's in his PJ's playing..."everybody wants you!"
Going to a Policeman's Xmas party
Have a couple beers get funky on the dance floor
Going to a Policeman's Xmas Party
Going have a good time for the rest of my life!
Take off your clothes
Take off everything you are
Take off your heart
Get funky on the dance floor
Going to have a good time for the rest...

I had to sign up for an account just to explain this song. It is actually based on a TRUE story that happened to John. Apparently, Johns caretaker lady was having an affair. Her husband came over to take her to lunch, and her boyfriend came out from the bedroom and attacked him with a knife. He apparently stabbed the husband a dozen times, but the husband was ok (as ok as you can be after being stabbed that many times). You can search the internet and find the story. The USA Today story is here: http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2004-09-01-caretaker-arrested_x.htm . As for the Christmas Party, that is not talked about in the article, so I don't know if that part is made up or not. But the other stuff is true.
Thanks dluse for the USA Today reference. The attempted murder happened in John's home on July 28. The housekeeper and boyfriend were charged on Sept 1. The song is John's nightmare of being involved stabbing and subsequent investigation for 4 weeks and running.
I always wanted to know the meaning of this song. It's interesting to hear these references. I had my own interpretation that is completely wrong but it helps me to enjoy the song each time I listen.

I imagine the song being written from the perspective of a Police Robot (probably futuristic). Police robots can do many of things in the song like defuse bombs, surveillance. In the future perhaps they can process crime scenes. If you could give them feelings they would be wishing they could go to a Policeman's Christmas Party and get funky on the dance floor....

After all they are doing all the work a police officer does. There might even be female robot so the the captain can get funky with her. :-)
After reading the lyrics it doesn't quite match up but i still like to stretch it.
i hate the way he sings this. i love every other song on this album.
as far as how he sings this song, it's not his normal character, but it's being sung through the eyes of a neurotic/paranoid suspect. if it was portrayed anyother way, this song would be too off to put into perspective. john's a genious, you just have to think in abstract ways in order to get as much out of every song as you can. i felt the same way when i first heard it, but next time you listen, think what someone in that situation would talk. i think you'll agree.
I think like alot of people I really did not appriciate this song. I thought it was odd and unlike john's other work. Whenever it came up on my ipod at random i'd skip over it. But listen to it a couple times through and i promise somehow it gets instilled into your mind. Whenever I'm sitting around bored it just pops into my head. Not one of my favorite five for fighting songs, but you learn to love it as much as the rest
I really like the song and I agree with careysent. I love it now. But as for what is going on, I can't say a really understand. Can anyone say what is going on in this song? I'll look for a video...
When I was at one of his concerts, if I remember correctly, he began to tell the audience about a time the police did this huge favor for this family or something to that extent. He'd then go play for the cops at Christmas.
Anyway, that's about as much as I know.
can anyone really explain what's going on in the song?
I am in love with this song. I didn't even get a chance to dissect the lyrics, I just love the sound of it
when i first listened to this song i didn't know what he was talking about. then it came to me. i think he is dreaming of becoming a policeman because he has heard of everything they do at parties. then he finally gets to go to one of the parties and after a while he wants to leave. at the end of the song he tells everyone to "be careful what you wish for" meaning anything can come true.
