Whatever it is you think you are you aren't:
A good friend, unique, well read, good looking, or smart.
Well, now you know.
Well I hate to be the one to bare such bad news,
I know it hurts to hear but it's true;
You don't mean anything to anyone but me.
And even I think that you're blinded by conceit
So now you know,
The free beer and basement shows don't mean what they did.
It's what you do, not who you were,
What you wear, where you've been.
So do something.
Whoever you think is watching you dance from across the room they aren't.
If anything they feel sorry for you because you try so hard.
I know it hurts to hear but it's the truth.
So you might as well hear it from a friend.
You're a has-been that never was.
And I know it's mean to say
But it's something I've been meaning to say for awhile.
You're a has-been that never was or will be.
A good friend, unique, well read, good looking, or smart.

this song is not about himself. It's about a friend he has. At first I thought it was about his brother, then, I really wasn't too sure. So, since he is really responsive on his myspace page, I asked him through a message who and what the song was about. That's when he told me it was about the friend.
I inquired more, and I asked if that person was really that bad, and he said "no"; he just took some "artistic liberties."
Just thought that would be interesting.
With this song and "Who Found Whose Hair..." lets me see how critical of his friends he is.
I pretty much think that this entire song is self explanatory... I love it so much because it really defines how it is for people who leave thier significant spouse. I mean it may not be true, but that's how they feel... They really feel that they were the best thing for that person and that they wont find anyone else as good as them. It's just a self reliever mentality we like to give ourselves... I love this song so much. Mike Kinsella never seizes to amaze me.
Oh, and I mad a mistake. This doesn't just have to deal with your significant spouse or whatever. Just someone dear to you that is no longer in your life, or who will no longer be in your life. sorry.
I had the chance to hear this song a few days ago on Purevolume, and after hearing this , "Bird in Hand", and "One of these Days" , I'm really stoked to get a copy of the new album. Anyways, I think this song is more of a self-reflection then anything,or maybe he's referring to his older brother Tim...It reminds me alot of his old song, "Note to Self" in some ways also. Either way, it's another great song by Mike.
I will only say that I agree with the first poster, great insight
He's said in interviews that the song is about himself. Basically just a reality check. its pretty self explanatory.

Alright, my bad.
Can someone show me what "interview" it is that they found that this song is about himself?
Thanks.
