First of all racecargrin, yes it's an american football song, but Mike performs it on the Owen/The Rutabega split, and second of all he changed the lyrics to the other night on the Owen version, so before you mock people for not knowing their "emo" ballads, you should probably make sure you aren't the one that is wrong.
he just re-did it because he needed a quick third song for his split with the rutabega. also lots of people wanted to hear him play it when he was out touring as owen.

not as good as the original, but it works pretty well owen style
i really like the original version, but this version sounds alot more personal when its just him. perhaps the only reason i dont like it better is because of the ending.
Actually in the Owen version, Mike does sing "the other night"...I don't like that as much as "the autumn night", but maybe it had something to do with flow. He changed the lyrics up again at the beginning of the second part of the song where he sings "the last thing I want to be is overly dramatic." In the AF version, it was "not to be."
i think theres more emotion in this version of the song
this song loses its potency sans drums and electric guitar intertwining hypnotically
the resonator at the end adds the hypnotic effect though. i really think that the lack of strong electric guitar and drums, both of which come off as overpowering to me in the AF version, really adds an intimacy to the song.
