Chicago Lyrics

Meet me in Chicago
Down by the water line
Step across the gold coast
To my heart and to your wine
Maybe Cincinnati
With a trip in the morning light
Step across the branches
I will follow you over the Rhine

And it takes one to know one
That's what they always say
I've waited for the dawn
And I've waited for the day
Oh, I'm coming low
And I'm willing to pray
Stepping through the haze
One more day on a wide open road
On and on and the lights come and go
And everything I might not even know
What is the distance?
On through the resistance singing

Meet me in Portland
Roast here in the summer light
See you in the evergreens
I will catch you down on the Northeast side
And maybe San Diego
Moonlight at the lowest tide
See you in the shoreline breaker
Stepping over my maker's line

And it takes one to know one
That's what they always say
I've waited for the dawn
And I've waited for the day
Oh, I'm coming low
And I'm willing to pray
Stepping through the haze
One more day on a wide open road
On and on and the lights come and go
And everything I might not even know
What is the distance?
On through the resistance singing

You met me on the backstreets
Right there at the end of the line
Where a spark turns into fire
And a tear falls into life

And it takes one to know one
That's what they always say
I've waited for the dawn
And I've waited for the day
Oh, I'm coming low
And I'm willing to pray
Stepping through the haze
One more day on a wide open road
On and on and the lights come and go
And everything I might not even know
What is the distance?
On through the resistance
On a wide open road
On and on and the lights come and go
And everything I might not even know
What is the distance?
On through the resistance singing

Meet me in Chicago
Down by the water line
You stepped across the gold coast
Stepped into this heart of mine

Another beautiful song from Kearney. Lyrics are riddled with biblical accounts. The water line..water being synonymous with the christian faith...cleanliness and baptism..new life. "My heart to ur wine" At the last supper Jesus used wine to substitute his blood, shed for us. "Step across the branches" a scene in the Bible where Jesus was greeted like a king..having palm frongs laid before his feet. "Stepping over my markers line" ...when Jesus drew the line in the sand. "Where a spark turns into fire" could simply mean jesus is the light of hope...even in the darkest of places (the 'backstreets'). I assume by all this...he is saying how real the Lord is. His connection with the Lord...following him through his journey. All of the scenes in the lyrics Jesus appaered in, and yet, here is Kearney also. Almost like the foot prints in the sand...he is always with us...no metter where we are or what we do.

I saw Mat perform this live, he commented that he is alone every Valentine's Day, so he wrote a little love song. To me I agree with Libby 18, its definitely got biblical meaning- just how we can find God (Christ) anywhere, even in our lowest times. I see Mat as a traveler, and to me I see it as a love song to God-saying that we can find God anywhere we go.

Totally agree with both comments about the biblical meanings...this is a powerful song that can relate to people on many different parts of their life I think. Love this song :)

It's a pretty song. I have nothing to add about the meaning in particular, but, in reference to the bit about Cincinnati, it's Over The Rhine...a district in the city named in reference to the Rhine River in Germany. It was named because people once had to cross a waterway to get into it...that waterway is gone, but Over The Rhine is still there and it's interesting in the sense that it's another reference to water.
