This such a wonderful song. It´s about a truckdriver that is on his way away from home.
Ciberratt, the song you are referring to is called "Snow Don't Fall". A extraordinarily beautiful song, I'm surprised they don't have the lyrics up for it on this site. That song, in addition to "Two Girls", was written in tribute to his girlfriend who was murdered hitchhiking en route to the studio to meet him. And you are correct, he never played it live.
This song however is written about Raton pass, which in Townes' words was "the fastest way to get from Texas to Colorado". He spent much of his young adult years up in the mountains of Colorado during the summer and they were a source of much inspiration in his songwriting. He wrote this pretty little tune later on in his life, and personally, it is one of my favorites.
It was written for his girlfriend who was murdered while hitchhiking and he never performed it after he recorded it.
