Ages of Ruin Lyrics

Starlight hex on a v-neck
Driving down the
Staircase with a
Arm full of Jesus
I think you got a vision
You can see the snowflakes, can't you now?
Is this the big good-bye,
Or the start of you and I?

The sky is cracking up
And the ice is falling down
She said, "I'm always comin' out
When the ice is falling down."
She says, "These poems are mine,"
Oh, Oh
"These poems are mine,"
Go, Go
"To your little shrine
Now close your little eyes
From the ages of ruin."

Oh, the pain was awful
Silence broke my neck
I was cheatin' on you with God, baby
But he couldn't get erect
There's no serenity in infinity
So now I'm back from black
And I'm travelin' to another world
Who her? She's comin' with me...
I'll be a goddamn mother fucker

The sky is cracking up
And the ice is falling down
She said, "I'm always comin' out
When the ice is falling down."
She says, "These poems are mine,"
Oh, Oh
"These poems are mine,"
Go, Go
"To your little shrine
Now close your little eyes
From the ages of ruin."

Close your eyes for the ages
Close your eyes for the ages

The sky is cracking up
And the ice is falling down
She said, "I'm always comin' out
When the ice is falling down."
She says, "These poems are mine,"
Oh, Oh
"These poems are mine,"
Go, Go
"To your little shrine
Now close your little eyes
From the ages of ruin."

I could be totally wrong but what I get from this is someone talking about being high and conversations had while being/being with someone who is high.

"Arm full of Jesus" makes me think of Heroin.

"She said, "I'm always comin' out When the ice is falling down." Ice is another word for meth. "Coming out" usually means you are "yourself" or who you feel yourself to be. So it's like "she" is saying that she's herself when she's coming down from the high.

Having had a friend that was hardcore into drugs and was probably one of the most talented people I've ever known in my life, she always showed me her art when she was doped up on something. It was either a song she wrote, a poem, or a new painting. So I connected that with the line "She says, "These poems are mine," Oh, Oh "These poems are mine," with that. She's just more open to someone seeing her work.

"Oh, the pain was awful Silence broke my neck" is obviously a metaphor. Like it's so silent you could hear a pin drop. Thing is when you are coming down from a drug, it's unlike any other pain you can imagine.

"I was cheatin' on you with God, baby But he couldn't get erect" Drugs are a God, in a sense. They have a way of taking control of people who think they have control. They pray that the next hit is as good as the first. Some drugs cause you to not be able to get an erection. Hence, cheating with God but without an erection. Sex without sex.

"So now I'm back from black And I'm travelin' to another world" I take it as meaning from not being high, to being high.

"Who her? She's comin' with me... I'll be a goddamn mother fucker" I take it as someone deciding to walk the path with him and he's shocked about it. Probably expecting her to give up on him.

"Go, Go "To your little shrine Now close your little eyes From the ages of ruin." A lot of people seek religion during or just before rehabbing. They seek forgiveness for the 'sin' they are willing to commit. Many believe in "out of sight, out of mind" if they close their eyes or are blinded to it, it no longer exists and can't affect them.

Anyhow, again, I could be wrong, but this is what I got out of it. It's still a very beautiful song and the only one that I actually like from Ima Robot. I heard this song life the first time I saw them, almost a decade ago. They were opening for MSI, and immediately fell in love with this song and enjoyed how the front man was climbing all over the walls and railings while performing this song.
