Scarecrow and Fungus Lyrics
Come on inside and I'll show you your brother
He’s got enough money to buy a new father
He’s got enough money to bother
Somebody else
Solder two wires together
Somebody else
Remember that mouthful you spat in his mouthful
He never forgave you, he’s so very spiteful
He’s so very vengeful and so very frightful
He’s got enough money to bother
Solder two wires together
Scarecrow and fungus, they ran through a stoplight
But it didn’t matter cause no one was hurt
Scarecrow and fungus, they ran through a stoplight
But it didn’t matter cause they were on foot
Got enough money to bother
Somebody else
Solder two wires together
Somebody else(x4)
I don’t know what I'm doing still here
They must have done such a very very good job…
I don’t know what I'm doing still here
They must have done such a very very good job…
uh
They say he’s a doctor but quite maladapted
They say he’s corrupted but quite well-respected
He’s got lots of money, we all really like him
He’s got enough money to bother
Come on inside and I'll show you your brother
He’s got enough money to buy a new father
He’s got enough money to bother

ok, just bear with me for a minute.....
A girl told the rich guy off, probably because he tried to buy her, so the rich guy, out of spite, goes and marries her sister and the family doesnt care because hes rich. Note how the singer says how awful he is but then says "he's got lots of money, we all really like him." Scarecrow and fungus are the married couple doing something they werent supposed to do, run the stoplight. Solder two wires means get married. Soldering two wires means bonding them, for those who didnt know. The rich guy bought a new father... in law, haha. This guy didnt need her, he had enough money to bother someone else and now hes her brother... in law.
Here's what I've got: The girl in the song comes from a working-class family, but she dated (or was pursued by) a wealthy man. When she tried to cut him out of her life, he took a sort of "back door" to staying involved with her by befriending her family. The first few lines make me think of her coming home one day and being introduced to him by her mother. The reference to him as "your brother" sounds like Christian imagery, which it might be, since Regina has worked some of that into other songs, but it could just be a reference to how her family has embraced him. He's largely buying their acceptance, or that's what I'm getting out of the line "he’s got enough money to buy a new father." Her family really wants to impress him, since they feel priveledged to get his attention, and they remind their daughter that "he’s got enough money to bother somebody else". The "solder two wires together" line is probably a reference to him trying to forge a bond with her, but it's also loaded with a lot of working-class imagery. It makes me think of her father or mother (or both) as a tradesperson. "Remember that mouthful you spat in his mouthful" - I think she really gave him a peice of her mind, a "mouthful", telling him how much she dislikes him. "They say he’s corrupted but quite well-respected. He’s got lots of money, we all really like him." This makes me think of a politician or a public figure - corrupt but with more respect than he knows what to do with. He's so used to being fawned over that her rejection really irks him. I think her musings "I don’t know what I'm doing still here, they must have done such a very very good job" are her thoughts as she wonders why she puts up with her parents' naivete. The chorus perplexed me for a long time, and it still does a little bit. The best interpretation I have is that it is a reference to their past relationship - that it was dangerous or destructive, and she was just lucky that "no one was hurt". They "ran through a stoplight", and the only reason they survived it unscathed is because "they were on foot", as in they weren't serious enough or emotionally invested enough yet to be hurt. It was a dangerous relationship that she was lucky not to be hurt by, and then smart enough to bail. But given the fact that everyone appears to have survived their past unscathed, her parents figure it's okay to stay close with this guy. I kind of imagine that maybe "scarecrow" is a childhood nickname for her, and "fungus" is a reference to him, since he isn't painted in a very flattering way in the story. Just my take, any thoughts?
It kind of seems to me as if this is a longer, more detailed interpretation of Idontknowme's post. Hm... suspicious...

I really enjoy this song, It's refreshing and springy, even though it doesn't seem very positive.
I think it's about people fighting, for no apparent reason, and holding unnecessary grudges. You gotta move on, be friends again, stop fighting, you know?
This song always holds a personal edge for me. It reminds me of my dad and his brother because my Uncle doesn't communicate with any of his real family since he's a rich bastard.
It also reminds me of my sister though when she says "solder two wires together."
wow no editing - " Regina is playing a random person that TELLS someone to meet...
I understand the story of the song...but what the heck is Scarecrow and Fungus???
Sometimes when i'm bored in class, i draw pictures of who I think scarecrow and fungus are!
I agree with savian... It makes more sense... Specially being that Regina sings about a wide array of different situations, and not always about being heartbroken and such. I just wonder what this means: "Scarecrow and fungus, they ran through a stoplight But it didn’t matter cause no one was hurt Scarecrow and fungus, they ran through a stoplight But it didn’t matter cause they were on foot" could it be that they met on accident while walking?! lol I dunno...
i always though this song is about two brothers who doesn't love each other becouse they fight a lot and they wish that they never had that kind of brother :s
This could be way off base. However, I think scarecrow and fungus are the parents of the "Brother" in the story. The mom is the scarecrow because she never stood up for herself and the dad is the fungus because he was a jerk or something. It could also be the other way around. They were bad parents to him and that was the "red light" that they ran. When she says no one got hurt, it's sarcastic because even though this guy is rich he's really hurt by his parents. He became mal adjusted and everyone speculates why. I also think Regina was showing their new baby (scarecrow and fungus's baby) what his brother turned out like. Either to show that it will happen again or to try and stop it.
i think this song is about a two brothers and one was adopted but everyone likes hime cuz he has a lot of money so even though he's mean, everyone hangs around him including his brother who doesnt really like him and would rather leave but doesnt.
Scarecrow i think refers to the first son because noone really likes him or pays attention to him and fungus refers to the adopted son because he has "grown" on everyone like a fungus!
At least thats what i think! :)
