Half-Assed Lyrics

you start trippin'
and I start slippin' away
I was taught to zip it
if I got nothin' nice to say
and down in the texas of my heart
driving a really big truck
headed down a dirt road
my love is scrunchin' up its features
the really big eyes
big lips, big nose

just show me a moment that is mine
its beauty blinding and unsurpassed
make me forget every moment that went by
and left me so half-hearted
'cause I felt it so half-assed

you are an unruly translucent
a dirty windshield with a shifting view
so many cunning running landscapes
for my dented door to open into
I just wanna tune out all the billboards
weld myself a mental shield
I just wanna put down all the pressures
and feel how I really feel

just show me a moment that is mine
its beauty blinding and unsurpassed
make me forget every moment that went by
and left me so half-hearted
'cause I felt it so half-assed

spring is super in the supermarkets
and the strawberries prance and glow
nevermind that they're all kinda tart and tasteless
as strawberries go
meanwhile, wild things are not for sale
anymore than they are for show
so I'll be outside, in love with the kind of beauty
it takes more than eyes to know

just show me a moment that is mine
its beauty blinding and unsurpassed
and I'll forget every moment that went by
and left me so half-hearted
'cause I felt it so half-assed

This is my favorite on the excellent Reprieve.

I just wanna tune out all the billboards weld myself a mental shield I just wanna put down all the pressures and feel how I really feel

I cried when I heard it the first time, because it was so carthatic. This is another of those Ani songs where you feel like it is a rebuke and an exhortation at the same time.

i feel this is a comment on feeling like nothing is making you feel alive, wanting for even 1 brief moment to feel something grab you.

The chorus and this verse are my favorites: "spring is super in supermarkets and the strawberries prance and glow nevermind that they're all kinda tart and tasteless as strawberries go meanwhile, wild things are not for sale anymore than they are for show so I'll be outside, in love with the kind of beauty it takes more than eyes to know"

It's pretty self-explanitory.

Just one question - HOW are there only 2 comments on this song???

Definitely a track for anyone who's ever felt stifled by expectations and the social boxes that everyone (loved ones included) put you in, so that you can never really be yourself, and in the end you just want out, want to "weld myself a mental shield... put down all the pressures and feel how I really feel"

Stunning.

I love that this song; I feel like it's describing wanting to really feel alive, living exactly how you mean to, and being who you are. The line "make me forget every moment that went by and left me so half-hearted 'cause I felt it so half-assed" always gets me, because I feel like I don't appreciate the fullness of moments. People are walking around, living life half-assed.

this song deserves vinyl or live or something. i've never heard it any other way, but i feel like my computer and my ipod don't sit right with it. singing it is nice though

I saw Ani singing this song live, it's so raw. apparently she wrote it when she went to london a couple of years ago, she opened her 2015 europe tour with it in London when I went to see her. brilliant song.
