And A Bang On The Ear Lyrics

Lindsay was my first love she was in my class
I would have loved to take her out but I was too shy to ask
The fullness of my feeling was never made clear
But I send her my love with a bang on the ear

Nora was my girl when I first was in a group
I can still see her to this day, stirring chicken soup
Now shes living in australia working for an auctioneer
But I send her my love with a bang on the ear

Deborah broke my heart and I the willing fool
I fell for her one summer on the road to liverpool
I thought it was forever but it was over in a year (oh dear)
But I give her my love with a bang on the ear

The home I made with bella became a house of pain
We weathered it together bound by a ball and chain
Is started up in fife, and ended up in tears (oh dear)
But I send her my love with a bang on the ear

Krista was a rover from canada she hailed
We crossed swords in san francisco we both lived to tell the tale
I dont know now where she is oh but if I had her here
Id give her my love with a bang on the ear

So my woman of the hearthfire, harbour of my soul
I watch you lightly sleeping and sense the dream that does unfold (like gold)
You to me are treasure, you to me are dear
So Ill give you my love with a bang on the ear

To be honest, I feel this is more about finding a place for those who got away. Between those girls you were too shy to talk to, those that left for other lands, those you couldn't keep up with or couldn't work out how to get by - all our lives are filled with the those we were sure to be the one, and that isn't what it turned out to be. But with all those that are in his past, he remembers why he felt the way he did about them seeing it through the "heart fire" -- so he thanks them (for more who they were, as much as who they are) by sending them his love.

My Interpretation

I think that this song is about finding the one. It chronicles the singer's past loves, (Lindsey, Norah, Deborah, Bella, Krista,) and went happened (or didn't happen) and how a small a part of you will always love them. He talks about his memories of them both good and bad, but at the end he talks about the "woman of my hearthfire, harbour of my soul," this person is essentially the one. He talks about how she is "treasure," so I think that this song is about how all the past relationships you have kind of shape you and guide you on the course to finding the one and all the things that went right or wrong make you appreciate that person all the more.

I couldn't have put it better myself. You've nailed it. Mike Scott has put a lot of personal events into this song but it still retains generic reference to all relationships.

The girlfriend history is plain enough - its the titular line I was wondering about?

I've read that a bang on the ear means a kiss on the ear, so this is altogether a lovely song.

Song Meaning

This song is really simple I think. A bang on the ear is what you do when you're young and too shy to tell a girl you like her.

But what makes it amazing is the last verse. She's not named, but his hearth love is the one. They all taught and gave him something but his hearth love is his life's love, but lol...the humour...she still gets the bang on the ear.
