The Advent of Panurge Lyrics
There coming over Charaton Bridge
Look do you see the man who is poor but rich
What do you wish; and where do you go;
who are you; where are you from:
Will you tell me your name?
Rest awhile; call me your friend
Please stay with me I'd like to help
Then he said,
How can I speak when I'm dry and my throat is burning
So bring me aid and I'll answer your doubts
Friend in need I'd like your help
Please take me home I'll stay with you
Then said he fair Pantagruel
My name is Panurge and I have come from Hell
Look at my friend
Look all around you
Look at my friend
Take all round you
Hey, Friend
(Improvised foreign words)
So brotherhood was made as their bond
Carried him home and provided for his needs
and his shelter; this day was done
as no other the like
Faithfully their vow was made and from that day they were as one
Look do you see the man who is poor but rich
What do you wish; and where do you go;
who are you; where are you from:
Will you tell me your name?
Rest awhile; call me your friend
Please stay with me I'd like to help
Then he said,
How can I speak when I'm dry and my throat is burning
So bring me aid and I'll answer your doubts
Friend in need I'd like your help
Please take me home I'll stay with you
My name is Panurge and I have come from Hell
Look all around you
Look at my friend
Take all round you
Hey, Friend
Carried him home and provided for his needs
and his shelter; this day was done
as no other the like
Faithfully their vow was made and from that day they were as one

The lyrical content of this song was inspired by "Gargantua and Pantagruel", a series of novels written in the 16th century by François Rabelais which are about the adventures of giants.
This song begins so delicate and ends up so powerful. Note the opening segment - the group is able to keep perfect sync with one another despite the lack of instrumentation for the sake of timing.

Absolutely amazing, plus a "medieval-meets-funk" recorder quartet segment they threw in the middle just to be different from the album version.
The Pied Piper from Hell?
I usually get called a geek for liking this type of music but I don't care this is terrific. I'm actually confused why everyone doesn't love this because it's so obviously appealing and isn't filled with a lot of dissonances as some of GG's other songs are. Is this prog rock or art rock? Sure, whatever, but more emphasis on rock. Again, this confuses me, because it has elements that should allow anyone who likes rock to also like this. Even more evidence that everyone should like this is the fact that I don't like prog rock all that much. I find a lot of those lengthy compositions with complicated song structures and unsatisfying melodies to be mentally frustrating when I'm trying to enjoy myself. This argument is definitely invalid and unsound, but the main thing I'm trying to say is that if someone like me who doesn't like prog/art/weird/inaccessible music (I feel like one can argue these are all synonymous) really enjoys this song, then it can't be any of those things and therefore, the average person who also doesn't like inaccessible music, should also enjoy it.
