This song can been seen as one relating to a relationship of any sort, but in fact it is about the group leaving their record label.
It's hysterical yet sad that there is only ONE Gentle Giant song on this whole website. Gentle Giant are a unique, British progressive rock band that released 12 albums between 1970 and 1980. Their music fused diverse elements from rock, classical, soul, blues, Renaissance music, jazz, and the avante-garde with superb musicianship. Accompanied by compelling & philisophical lyrics, a strong understanding of electronic equipment, and the use of 30+ instruments makes Gentle Giant one of my favorite bands. The music is both beautiful, powerful, and challenging to the ear. If you are a fan of Yes, ELP, 20th-century classical composers, or similarly challenging music, you owe it to yourself to check out Gentle Giant.

@Chrispy Bear I don't know about being dumped. I think it's a self-dialogue about battling regret about dumping someone, with only one's "free hand" as consolation.

As described by Khaos above, its about the band leaving a record label. It does seem to relate closely to ending any particular relationship.
Ironically, Derek went on to be an extremely successful executive in the music industry. I’m happy he did. His brother Ray also did well in the video game, soundtrack field. Kerry, my favorite keyboardist, from what I hear lives a quiet life. I believe he played at his church. Can you imagine someone of his talent performing at church? I’d be there every Sunday!

amazing song, could be about any kind of relationship being ended, whether it be a romantic one, a friendship, a job, anything. My favorite off of Free Hand, and currently my second favorite out of all their songs, after the amazing Wreck.
