Soldier Lyrics
He was a soldier
He always was
He left this city to fight for America
And we fell in love to music
We were just kids
We didn't have time to be sorry for what we did
*chorus*
And I say hey boy
It'll be OK in the end
And if this life doesn't give you the love you expect
There's always the next
She was a pretty Texas girl
An answer to his prayers
He called me to tell me he'd fallen in live with her
She sang like an angel
Loved like a friend
And she made my soldier believe he could live again
When she said
*chorus*
So I'll be a gambler
And he'll be home free
He'll marry Texas and I'll marry melody
So love like my soldier
Fight for what's true
And smile at the gates cause their hate doesn't belong to you
*chorus*
He always was
He left this city to fight for America
And we fell in love to music
We were just kids
We didn't have time to be sorry for what we did
And I say hey boy
It'll be OK in the end
And if this life doesn't give you the love you expect
There's always the next
An answer to his prayers
He called me to tell me he'd fallen in live with her
She sang like an angel
Loved like a friend
And she made my soldier believe he could live again
When she said
And he'll be home free
He'll marry Texas and I'll marry melody
So love like my soldier
Fight for what's true
And smile at the gates cause their hate doesn't belong to you

This song is so sad. Im guessing about her ex boyfriend leaving to fight as a soldier and coming back and having changed fell in love with someone else. "He'll marry Texas and I'll marry melody" that line is my favourite and its so sad.
I love this song! I think it's about her friend going off to fight as a soldier and falling in love when he gets back. I think the main message in this song is pretty much said out word for word in the chorus:
And I say hey boy It'll be OK in the end And if this life doesn't give you the love you expect There's always the next
Basically it's just saying everything works out in the end.
Actually the chorus missed a part. The lines are. ..
And I say hey boy Whatcha crying for? It'll be okay in the end And if this life doesn't give you the love you expect There's always the next
Anna's story for this song is absolutely amazing. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, this "soldier" is the boy who "turned 21 at the base at Fort Bliss" in "Breathe(2AM)"
I didn't like this song the first time I heard it, even though I'm an Anna Nalick fan. But after repeated listenings, I've grown to love it and realize how sad it is. Morethanmelody, I didn't know that, but that's really cool. i love that verse of "Breathe (2AM)"
It's so amazing to me how once you listen to Anna Nalick's CD, Wreck of Day, long enough, you come to learn that all of her songs fit together. I find that Soldier is the main story, and that the other songs fit into it. I wrote a string of stories based on this song for my english class. I came up with this: I. Soldier A. More Than Melody: the girl and boy fall in love B. Forever Love (Digame): they promise to love eachother forever C. In The Rough: The boy comes back, but they are not in love anymore. D. Bleed: They have broken up. E. Drink Me: The girl starts a new life, and sees the boy at a performance F. Catalyst: This is the boy talking to his new girlfriend/wife. She wants to leave him, and he doesn't want her to leave. G. Breathe (2AM): this is a bit of a stretch, but the wife finds the old girlfrind and they go together to get a divorce H. Wreck of the Day: the conclusion to everything
What do you guys think? I know, it's not Anna's life, but the stories worked out quite well.
I love the lyrics to this song! My husband is a soldier but luckily he did not find someone else and ended up marrying me!
I agree with you 'iplayflute21' but I think the order is wrong. A. More Than Melody: the girl and boy fall in love B. Forever Love: they promise to love eachother forever C. 2 am: Girl gets pregnant and they choose to have an abortion. He leaves for the war D. In The Rough: The boy comes back from war, but they are not in love anymore. D. Bleed: They have broken up E. Drink Me: The girl starts a new life, and sees the boy at a performance F. Catalyst: This is the boy talking to his new girlfriend. She wants to leave him, and he doesn't want her to leave. H. Wreck of the Day: the conclusion to everything
Found this interview http://www.fye.com/Anna-Nalick-Interview_stcVVcatId480258VVviewcat.htm And here's what Anna Nalick says about the song "Soldier":
Bp: About these extra tracks. Since these are the 'new' ones for many folks, what can you tell me about them?
Anna: One song, called "Soldier," I never wanted to put out. I think it's a beautiful song. It doesn't sound finished, which I like. It's just me being myself. I never wanted to release it only because two or three years ago when I was collecting songs for the first album, there were a lot of songs out that were about the war and about the soldiers and about the guys coming home and part of me felt like that's a really great way to comfort people. But then a part of me felt like it was a little bit of exploitation when it caught on and all of a sudden bands realized, 'Ok, this is the way to make money right now, because this is what people are feeling.' And then there were these songs that just seemed half-hearted but had that theme. And I thought, this song, my song, "Soldier," is very personal because it's about a boy that I know. The whole story is true. It's about a boy that I knew in high school who was ready to give up entirely and then met a girl who turned everything around for him. And now he's great. Now he's married and has a baby and is very happy. But I thought, 'I don't want to be in that category,' because what if that becomes the single and then I'm just one of those people that took a very opportunistic approach to what was going on at the time.
Some parts of this song, just the guitar chords, sound like Wreck of the Day. Just saying.
Anyways, this song is really beautiful.
