Heart's a Mess Lyrics

Pick apart
The pieces of your heart
And let me peer inside
Let me in
Where only your thoughts have been
Let me occupy your mind
As you do mine

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this

You have lost
Too much love
To fear, doubt and distrust
Its not enough
You just threw away the key
To your heart

You don't get burned
'Cause nothing gets through
It makes it easier
Easier on you
But that much more difficult for me
To make you see

Love ain't fair
So there you are
My love

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you can't live like this

Love ain't safe
You won't get hurt if you stay chaste
So you can wait
But I don't wanna waste my love

It never ceases to amaze me how much people read into crap that's not even there. The meaning of this song is quite clear:

The singer is in love with someone who's been burned in relationships so many times that he or she has locked their heart up and thrown away the key. He's desperately trying to get through to the person, to help them heal, because you can't survive without love. But it's getting harder and harder to deal with, so he's pleading with her to give in, the alternative being that he will leave and find someone else, because he has so much love to give but can no longer waste it on someone who can't give it back.

Pretty straight-forward.

Since this is art, and damn good art at that, this can be about any relationship you care to imagine.

For example, imagine this is a love song sung by God to the entirety of humanity. I don't care if you are a Christian, atheist, Buddhist, etc. just do it as a thought exercise. Start reading the lyrics and imagine God does exist, and he's just like anyone else in a relationship with another entity that has free will, etc.

It's beautiful. :)

@JasonBunting, I was looking into comments on the meaning of this song to see if anyone else believed this. I hear this as a message from Jesus, however he is not just like anyone else in a relationship, imagine he knows you better than you know yourself, and he is trying to save you. I am a Christian and this song gave me chills, because of how accurately I believe it depicts how Jesus feels towards unbelievers.

It really is Beautiful.

@steve10335 - it's true. God/Jesus, same essential thing (John 10:30). One of the things that it speaks to is the idea of going out on a limb to live life, to take risks - and that by doing so, we actually have the opportunity to increase not only the love we receive, but our own capacity to give love. I'm glad you commented on this song, because it's been a while since I've thought of it and it's really so beautiful. :)

Cant believe no record company would do this guy, this album was recorded entirely in his flat...

this songs so brilliant...

In my opinion , this song is about a little of everything. For exemple, the clip. The clip has such a deep meaning, the first thing that follows him represents the effects of war, the injured and blind pelican represents our treatment of the animals we share the planet with, that thing that has wood on his back represents deforestation, the wrecking ball monster represents our need to destroy and create, the serpent in the business suit is his views on capitalism, the skeleton represents our life being sucked from us and there's spider web that connects them all.

So I think this song it's about what we humans did/are doing with the world, it's really sad when we think about it, isn't it?

Oh my god, Thank you DSM. I think sometimes we're all so overstimulated visually (with things like facebook staring back at us all the time...). I saw this video a dozen times, and my limited imagination could only see a confusing animated style, and I didn't understand it. Now I'm like...seriously? Ridiculously obvious symbolism went right over my head, lol. Thank you for helping me see the video! feeling more connected now.

I think you've got it pegged D.S.M. . I think he's telling us all our hearts are a mess. we won't admit to it, and it makes no sense cause we easily point out others flaws. we need to work on ourselves. i think he wants us to wake up. I feel that's why there is so much emphasis on the word "CONNECT".
