Space City Lyrics

If I could have one wish right now
I'd be about as half as tough as I pretend I am
Then I wouldn't care how empty this old house feels
I could take her things and take them far away from here
I could make sure no dirt ever got on her name
Cause looking at that stone wouldn't bring me so much pain
I could go into town wearing my finest clothes
I could turn these tears into blood and make it run ice cold

Space City's one hour up the road from me
One hour away from as close to the moon as anybody down here is ever gonna be
And somewhere beyond that big white light is where my heart is gone
And somewhere she's wondering what's taking me so long

My hands are as good to me as they've ever been
And I ain't ashamed of anything my hands ever did
But sometimes the words I used were as hard as my fist
She had the strength of a man and the heart of a child I guess

Space City's one hour up the road from me
One hour away from as close to the moon as anybody down here is ever gonna be
And somewhere beyond that big white light is where my heart is gone
And somewhere she's wondering what's taking me so long

This song is about the writer's grandfather dealing with the death of his wife. Space City is what they call the NASA space center in Huntsville, AL...near where the songwriter grew up. I think I cried the first time I heard it. I can see my grandparents in this song and how lost my granddad was after my grandmother died. Beautiful song.

Looking east from Florence, Alabama and about an hours drive, you can see the big white light from Huntsville a.k.a. Space City. Really bright with a raising full moon.

A lonely man in a big empty house missing his wife who has passed on. He keeps her grave stone clean and wishes he could join her in heaven.

I think the third verse refers to using his hands proudly for hard work but never striking or hitting his deceased wife. Now he is ashamed for hurting her with words which were just as bad as beating her.

I think you're exactly right, with one exception. He isn't keeping his wife's grave clean. Actually he says he wishes he was tough enough to go to her grave and keep it clean, but he's not as tough as he pretends to be.

I think the first verse, the nararator is talking about the person he loved, saying that she has died, and that he misses her a lot. "I could make sure no dirt ever got on her name Cause looking at that stone wouldn't bring me so much pain"

Space City seems to me to be some sort of social gathering place in town that has some sort of space theme, and he's saying that that's the closest anyone is ever gonna get to the moon. I think he figures that would bring him closer to heaven, and therefor closer to the woman that he loves.

I think the line, "And somewhere beyond that big white light [the moon] is where my heart is gone," is saying that the person he loved was his heart, and now his heart is broken.

Also, I think the line, "And somewhere she's wondering what's taking me so long," is saying that he thinks his love is waiting for him in heaven. This line, with a few others, as well as DBT's recurring use of the theme of suicide, also makes me think that perhaps he is considering suicide in hopes to see her again.

I'm not exactly sure what the second verse is saying though. Anyone have any speculations?

I think the second verse might be talking about how he verbally abused his wife/girlfriend, and maybe it had some part in her death (suicide or just incidentally).

"But sometimes the words I used were as hard as my fist She had the strength of a man and the heart of a child I guess"

and i think hes trying to make himself feel a little better by telling himself that at least he didnt hit her

"My hands are as good to me as they've ever been And I ain't ashamed of anything my hands ever did"...
