Boiled Frogs Lyrics
A man sits at his desk
One year from retirement
And he's up for review
Not quite sure what to do
Each passing year
The workload grows
I’m always wishing, I’m always wishing too late
For things to go my way
It always ends up the same
Count your blessings
I must be missing, I must be missing the point
Your signal fades away and all I’m left with is noise
Count your blessings on one hand
So wait up, I’m not sleeping alone again tonight
There’s so much to dream about, there must be more to my life
Poor little tin man, still swinging his axe
Even though his joints are clogged with rust
My youth is slipping, my youth is slipping away
Safe in monotony, so safe, day after day
Count your blessings
My youth is slipping, my youth is slipping away
Cold wind blows off the lake and I know for sure that it's too late
Count your blessings on one hand
So wait up, I’m not sleeping alone again tonight
There’s so much to dream about, there must be more to my life
Whoa oh oh oh oh
Can’t help but feel betrayed
Punch the clock every single day
There’s no loyalty and no remorse
Youth sold for a pension cheque
And it makes him fucking sick
He heating up, he can’t say no
So wait up, I’m not sleeping alone again tonight
There’s so much to dream about, there must be more to my life
So wait up
So wait up, I’m not sleeping alone again tonight
Between the light and shallow waves is where I’m going to die
Wait up for me
Wait up for me
Wait up for me
One year from retirement
And he's up for review
Not quite sure what to do
Each passing year
The workload grows
For things to go my way
It always ends up the same
Count your blessings
I must be missing, I must be missing the point
Your signal fades away and all I’m left with is noise
Count your blessings on one hand
There’s so much to dream about, there must be more to my life
Even though his joints are clogged with rust
Safe in monotony, so safe, day after day
Count your blessings
My youth is slipping, my youth is slipping away
Cold wind blows off the lake and I know for sure that it's too late
Count your blessings on one hand
There’s so much to dream about, there must be more to my life
Punch the clock every single day
There’s no loyalty and no remorse
And it makes him fucking sick
He heating up, he can’t say no
There’s so much to dream about, there must be more to my life
So wait up
So wait up, I’m not sleeping alone again tonight
Between the light and shallow waves is where I’m going to die
Wait up for me
Wait up for me
Wait up for me

Taken from an interview:
"Boiled Frogs" is actually dear to Pettit's heart and he's fighting not to change the title.
"It's an analogy," Pettit begins. "I wrote it inspired by my father who worked at a job where he designed refrigerator parts for 26 years. He was coming up to his pension the last three years and I guess when people are coming up to their pension they really put the screws to them. They're up for review all the time, trying to get them to quit so that they forfeit their pension. It really makes it a stressful last three years. The song is kind of about that, about there being no loyalty in the workplace.
"And my mother went to this conference talking to different generations in the workplace and they referred to her generation as 'boiled frogs.' The analogy is that if you take a frog and put it in boiling water, it will jump right out immediately, but if you put it in cold water and then you slowly turn the heat up, they'll just eventually fall asleep and die. Same way with people in the workplace. If it's too hectic when they first get there, they'll just quit and get another job, but if you slowly up the workload, lower the pay, they're more likely to sit there and just boil."
for the title relating to the song...
seeing as how its georges dad n the whole pension thing and trying to get him to quit... his boss was metaphorically "turning up the heat on him" tryin to get him to "jump out"
The second verse, "My youth is slipping away... safe in monotony... day after day..." Currently descibes my life to the letter.
The part in the film clip with the dude sitting in the office is basically me, right down to the facial expressions he makes when he's on the phone etc etc
Hearing and seeing this song a few months back struck a deep chord with me. It was like a total slap in the face with a cold, wet towel, and since then, I have been unable to sit in this office and work - I'm going to need to face up to my boss sometime soon and tell him I can't stand working here in the monotony.
This song is so totally true. The lines "Can't help but feel betrayed... there's no loyalty and no remorse..." are so totally true - you see it when you work in a corporate office job like mine.
This song teaches such a valuable lesson - never let yourself get to the point where you're waking up in the morning every day only because that's all there is to do, because it slowly kills you. The world does betray young people by teaching them from a young age that going to work is a great thing (the economy needs mindless drones to work afterall), when in reality, most people will end up in a dead-end job, hating every minute of it, and slowly killing their souls - until they becomes completely apathetic drones.
Everyone needs to hear this song, it reflects what is happening in society 100%
Nice, first comment.
First of all, I really love this song. Even though it sounds quite different from the AOF we're used to.
As for the meaning, the lyrics seem pretty straight forward. It's about appreciating every little thing in life before it's too late. The lines "I’m always wishing, I’m always/wishing too late/For things to come my way/It always ends up the same/Count your blessings " probably sum it best as for my view.
Although, there could be a deeper meaning which I haven't quite got. o_ô
Can't wait for 'Crisis!'.
Great background to the song.
So I wasn't THAT far off.
ahh sorta reminds me of accidents...but better. i like how they're getting more of wade in there. great job fellas, great sound. can't wait for crisis
greatguru89 - completely agree with what you said. it definately sounds a bit like accidents. i've also read that wade has his own ballad on the new album. which i can't wait to hear. i bloody love this song! bring on crisis =]
^ You should check out Black Lungs if you really like Wade's voice. Great songs done by Wade.
Yessss, the Black Lungs :]
Absolutely awesome.
I think the line "You spoke for present check" should be "Your soul for a pension cheque"
I didn't read the part of the interview that george did before I heard this, but I definitly got the feeling that someone was struggling with the company they work for for their retirement money.
Crisis is going to be amazing, no doubt about it
