Awaiting on You All Lyrics

You don't need no love in
You don't need no bed pan
You don't need a horoscope or a microscope
To see the mess that you're in
If you open up your heart
You will know what I mean
We've been polluted so long
Now here's a way for you to get clean

By chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
Chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see

You don't need no passport
And you don't need no visas
You don't need to designate or to emigrate
Before you can see Jesus
If you open up your heart
You'll see he's right there
Always was and will be
He'll relieve you of your cares

By chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
Chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see

You don't need no church house
And you don't need no Temple
You don't need no rosary beads or them books to read
To see that you have fallen
If you open up your heart
You will know what I mean
We've been kept down so long
Someone's thinking that we're all green

And while the Pope owns 51% of General Motors
And the stock exchange is the only thing he's qualified to quote us
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
By chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free

I also saw a slight dig at John Lennon in the first couple of verses when he talks about not needing a love-in or bed-pan (talking about John and Yoko's bed-in for peace) or needing a passport or visa (John's emigration to the US)

Very good! I never caught that. Lennon was notable for digging at his band mates, and not in a nice way.

I generally agree with you, but only with the first verse of the song. The song was written in 1970 when Lennon still lived in the UK, and his visa problems appeared first from the time when he moved the US later.

I don't agree that it's about hinduism (why would he mention finding Jesus?). For that matter, he shows no favoritism to any particular religion. Instead, George is saying that you can find Lord / Jesus / God / whatever you want to call him / her, by pushing aside organized religion (you don't need "church", "temple", "rosary beads", or "books") in favor of internalized spirituality. Your path to God is inside ("open up your heart"), not through organized religion. George was certain a non-conformist! He never gets the credit that he truly deserves.

It can hardly be a criticism of organised religion in general when George was a card-carrying Hare Krishna at this time (indeed, he wanted to shave his head and move into a temple but ISKCON's founder, Srila Prabhupada, told him he could be more use to the movement with his music).

What it actually is is a scathing attack on both the Catholic church ("the Pope owns 51 per cent of General Motors...", etc.) and those that profess to have a religion and to want to know to God–'Sunday Christians'–but in fact only pay lip-service to him when it suits...

Clearly about hinduism and how he wants people to open their eyes.

I've often wondered what is meant by "the pope owns 51% of General Motors". Clearly, it is not a reference to the Vatican pope, so I continue to wonder if it is some sort of reference to a guy named Carl Pope who actually had a connection to GM.

My Opinion

I'm pretty sure he is referring to the Catholic Pope, as a way of referencing the Catholic Church's heavy investments in Gulf Oil, Shell, General Motors, Bethlehem Steel, General Electric, IBM and a few others.

Wonder if it’s a play on words - I think it’s a dig at the Catholic Church and it’s business investments etc, ….it leaves me sad because on one hand George and his spirituality so pure, then on the other, cynical….true love and cynicism should perhaps leave someone checking their motives…yes? The media says George dug hard at Catholicism…I still want to believe he was all about trying to reach your highest spiritual stature, no religion….the Lord..
