The Secret's In The Telling Lyrics
The Signal, its subtle
We pass just close enough to touch
No Questions, no Answers
We Know by now to say enough
With only simple words
With only subtle terms
The Things we Feel alone from one another
There Is A Secret That We Keep
I Wont Sleep If You wont Sleep
Because Tonight Might be the last chance well be given
We are compelled to do
What we must do
We are compelled to do
What We have been forbidden
So i wont sleep if you wont sleep tonight
Our act of defiance, we keep this secret in our blood
No paper, Or Letters
We pass just close enough to touch
We love in secret names
We hide in our veins
The Things that keep us bound to one another
There is a secret that we keep
I wont sleep if you wont sleep
Because Tonight Might be the last chance well be given
We are compelled to do
What we must do
We are compelled to do
What We have been forbidden
Until The last resiliant hope is frozen deep inside my bones
And this broken fate has cleaned me and my memories for its own
Your name is pounding through my veins, cant you hear how it is sung
And i can taste you in my mouth, while the words escape my lungs
And ill whisper only once
There is a secret that we keep
I wont sleep if you wont sleep
Because Tonight Might be the last chance well be given
We are compelled to do
What we must do
We are compelled to do
What We have been forbidden
Cause you will be somebody's girl
You will keep eachother warm
But Tonite, I am here in the cold
We pass just close enough to touch
No Questions, no Answers
We Know by now to say enough
With only simple words
With only subtle terms
The Things we Feel alone from one another

I'm not sure but to me it sounds like it's about loving between siblings...For example in these lines: "We hide in our veins The Things that keep us bound to one another" ... I dunno,though...just a guess...
Okay, so I saw Dashboard live last night, and never really got this song until I saw Chris sing it live.
He's talking about an affair, making love to someone he's not supposed to. I feel like they're hiding from their parents, because at that age, sexual desires should be kept a secret. So they have this awesome night ("I won't sleep if you won't sleep tonight"), and keep it between themselves. And they come to know each other so well through this experience that they can talk to each other without words, without paper.
Oh, yes- One of their greatest songs. Personally, I like his old stuff better, before he had the whole back-up band thing going on. But Chris never loses his style. He's so great on stage, and he draws the crowd in so much. You understand so much just by watching him. It's really a once in a lifetime experience (unless, of course, you go more than once. :) )
I have been with my boyfriend for three years. (I must warn you this is straight out of Jerry Springer, but it's true.) My mom and his dad had an affair. MY parents almost split, my dad moved out, but he eventually came back. I'm thankful that my family is still together, but though neither my boyfriend or I have done anything wrong, we are ultimately the ones being punished in this situation. I am forbidden to see him. If I do, there are huge consequences. When I heard this song, particularly the verse that says "we are compelled to do what we must do, we are compelled to do what is forbidden." I almost cried when I heard this song. It perfectly expresses how it feels to be so in love, yet forbidden to see each other. It's a song about a modern day Romeo and Juliet as cliche and corny as that may sound. I love this song.
I recently read a book in my English class called Anthem, by Ayn Rand, and I swear almost every word of this song matches up completely with that book. It's a really great song--a different take, sort of, on the old forbidden love cliche.
it could be, but i feel that it is much more about 1984. love is forbidden. sex is purely for procreational purposes and assigned by the ministry. "and you will be somebody's girl/you will keep each other warm/but tonight i'm feeling cold."

just a thought, but i think that this song goes perfectly with the book twilight if you've read it
i mean they start off not liking each other then they get together when they shouldn't and he's always cold
but this song is truely amazing and always gives me the goose bumps
i also agree with everyone else how it's about a an affair
I think you're on to something here and in fact I think it's quite literally describing the beginning of Bella and Edward's relationship.

"The signal, it's subtle we pass just close enough to touch No Questions, no answers we know by now to say enough"
This "signal" of course is when their eyes meet and instantly there's a connection with one another that they've never had before. It's such a deep connection that at first they don't even talk about what he is or who he is ("No questions, no answers") or vampirism in general because they're...
This "signal" of course is when their eyes meet and instantly there's a connection with one another that they've never had before. It's such a deep connection that at first they don't even talk about what he is or who he is ("No questions, no answers") or vampirism in general because they're so invested in each other by the most incidental of glances that it doesn't even make sense to talk ("we know by now to say enough"). Not to mention Edward doesn't even want to talk to her at first because he fights his compulsion to get to know her so hard he's scared to go to school.
"The secret that we keep"
This is the most obvious reference since it can describe both the forbidden nature of their relationship in the context of the high school (new girl, older guy), and of Edward being a vampire living in a modern American society, amongst the very prey they feed on.
"I won't sleep if you won't sleep"
The most recognizable image to draw from would be in the movie version where Edward is shown hanging out in her room while she's asleep. The line is a literal depiction of Edward's inability to fall asleep but it also hints at how dedicated he is to her that he is finally wrestling with a consequence, albeit a minor one, of his immortality and the things that come with being a vampire (like not being able to sleep).
"We are compelled to do what we must do we are compelled to do what we have been forbidden"
This is a common teenagers-are-gonna-be-teenagers sentiment, but when applied to Edward and Bella, there are the added dimensions of Edward and Bella, being vampire and human respectively, being involved in a romantic relationship which human society would abhor, and which the Volturi would reject just as vehemently. And in that sense, the song, and consequently their relationship, there is an obvious parallel very much like Romeo and Juliet, as has been previously stated upthread.
"Our act of defiance, we keep this secret in our blood"
This line appears to be the easiest to refer to the Twilight series with since he mentions blood. But because the physical blood of Bella and the blood of Edward is so different, one almost has to think to the marriage in Breaking Dawn for it to make sense. Because only once they're married does "our blood" in the line take on the symbol of the blood being mixed in marriage. Though it's hardly a "secret" to anyone at that point, it could be that either they or the reader still feels that their love and even their marriage is a secret in a romantic, figurative sense.
I could go on...
The song is up here. Check it ouut.

Its great. It grows you. Powerful.
I'm wondering if the rest of the album will be more on the emo side. I hope there is some happy songs as well. This is summer after all.
One of my faves from the new disc... Really catchy!

this song is brilliant, I'm pretty sure I love the last line best, even though it goes "tonight I am feeling cold" not "tonight I am here in the cold".
still, it's pretty amazing
Yes rescinded is right. Also in the chorus it should be may instead of might. And on the last chorus it should be "what we have to" instead of "what we must do".
