They checked the shrine and the temple but he wasn't there
They checked the mosque and the chapel; nope, not there
Since you've been away on holiday
The natives are all nightmares
Since you've been away on holiday
I daydream you'll disappear
You keep us on a leash we can't conceive but still must adhere to
The natives are whipping each other over which God they prefer
I wish he'd do us all a favor and just defer
Since you've been away on holiday
We don't know which God is which
And since you've been away on holiday
It's getting harder to give a shit
So if you stayed away on holiday we could get on with it
I mean we could evolve like this if you just call it quits
Since you've been away on holiday
We've stomached your archaic rule
And since you've been away on holiday
We've hosted some wars over you
So stay away on holiday, my friend, we don't need your services
Your excuses, your mysterious ways
Your mysterious ways
Your mysterious ways
Your mysterious ways
What a mysterious way to behave
What a mysterious way to just go away
Lord, let us go
They checked the mosque and the chapel; nope, not there
Since you've been away on holiday
The natives are all nightmares
Since you've been away on holiday
I daydream you'll disappear
You keep us on a leash we can't conceive but still must adhere to
I wish he'd do us all a favor and just defer
Since you've been away on holiday
We don't know which God is which
And since you've been away on holiday
It's getting harder to give a shit
So if you stayed away on holiday we could get on with it
I mean we could evolve like this if you just call it quits
We've stomached your archaic rule
And since you've been away on holiday
We've hosted some wars over you
So stay away on holiday, my friend, we don't need your services
Your excuses, your mysterious ways
Your mysterious ways
Your mysterious ways
Your mysterious ways
What a mysterious way to behave
What a mysterious way to just go away

It's "we've stomached your archaic rule" meaning old
I think he is talking about how God has just abandonned us, and now we're better off without God.
I dont think hes saying we're better off without God - i interpret it as him saying "either be here or don't, but stop confusing people because its messing up the world".
i hear "You keep a signed lease we cant conceive but still must adhere to"
I think this is the weakest song on the album. I like Tim's attacks on religion throughout the album, but this one is a bit more cliched than most, and, lyrically, sounds like a less eloquent rewrite of Jane's Addiction's "Had a Dad". Still, the ending with that female voice that you hear in the background singing "Lord let us go" is pretty powerful.
I agree with Neobonzi, that if you're(God is) absent so often, just leave us alone. The conflicts of opinions and beliefs of the true God and what he wants (Judism, Christianity, Islam...)cause wars because of you, confusing lives and we're better off without you. That we only have problems because of your appearance and disappearance. That if you made us then just let us be. The "lord let us go" at the end is so powerful and amazing.

This started out as my least favorite on the album but now it's one of my favorites. Some of the weaker lyrics still, but Tim's voice, the constant horns, and the incredible ending more than make up for it.
anyone else hear a definite similarity to The Dismemberment Plan in this song?
"I did dream that you'll disappear."
i think it's "i day-dreamed you disappeared"
the lyrics are weaker than the rest of the album but this song is amazing
