"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
A turning tide
Lovers at a great divide
Why d'you laugh
When I know that you hurt inside?
And why'd you say
It's just another day, nothing in my way
I don't wanna go, I don't wanna stay
So there's nothing left to say
And why'd you lie
When you wanna die, when you hurt inside
Don't know what you lie for anyway
Now there's nothing left to say
A tell-tale sign
You don't know where to draw the line
And why'd you say
It's just another day, nothing in my way
I don't wanna go, I don't wanna stay
So there's nothing left to say
And why'd you lie
When you wanna die, when you hurt inside
Don't know what you lie for anyway
Now there's nothing left to say
Well for a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, it seems to me that you're having such a nice time
You're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, it seems to me that you're having such a nice time
You're having such a nice time
Lovers at a great divide
Why d'you laugh
When I know that you hurt inside?
And why'd you say
It's just another day, nothing in my way
I don't wanna go, I don't wanna stay
So there's nothing left to say
And why'd you lie
When you wanna die, when you hurt inside
Don't know what you lie for anyway
Now there's nothing left to say
A tell-tale sign
You don't know where to draw the line
And why'd you say
It's just another day, nothing in my way
I don't wanna go, I don't wanna stay
So there's nothing left to say
And why'd you lie
When you wanna die, when you hurt inside
Don't know what you lie for anyway
Now there's nothing left to say
Well for a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, it seems to me that you're having such a nice time
You're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time
For a lonely soul, it seems to me that you're having such a nice time
You're having such a nice time

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
this is talking about someone who always says hes fine but has big troubles inside him/herself. hes definitely hiding what hes got inside but keeps it only to look fine.
true, i feel so identified with
best song from the album...
this type of song is one of that ones.. that you can put on repeat mode without getting tired of listening.
definatly about someone hiding their feelings.
to me it feels like they are feelings of hopelessness and not knowing what do do. feeling paralized in like
I first heared this song right after my ex girlfriend decided to end a 2 year relationship and right away found all the meaning that it holds, for me. A turning tide > everything changed Lovers at a great divide > we broke up Why'd you lie > she told me she was better off without me When I know that you hurt inside? > however when we met and she told me this, she was pouring tears while i wasnt, cos i knew she was making stufff up just to leave me. Then there was the classic "lets be friends" she threw at me, but even then she wouldnt care bout me anymore, so i felt like "I don't wanna go, I don't wanna stay / ... / When you wanna die, when you hurt inside" Then: Don't know what you lie for anyway Now there's nothing left to say > she was pretending we could be friends but in fact we couldnt talk to eachother in a normal manner anymore.
Then the last part, Well for a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time For a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time has a totally ironic or sarcastic tone to me, cos she used to tell me she wouldnt be able to forget me soon, she'd stay alone for a long time, while in fact one month after she left me she was already with someone else.
Thats my interpretation-
I think you and I to a degree share the same context in which we perceive the song but I hope all is better for you know... & I must say this song carries a lot of meaning for me<br />
@andomar .... fuck the old cunt brother ... nothing in your way ... just another day ... Best ... Lee ❤
I love this song-this pretty my favorite of theirs. :) I've asked that question of others before.
I see the sea theme ('turning tide') with the Keane songs, Atlantic, album is under the Iron Sea. Sounds like he's accusing his partner of lying to him and for just generally messing up in the relationship
best song from under the iron sea ... great album
The song is about the relationship between Tim Rice-Oxley and Tom Chaplin (from their website and other fan sites) and not a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, thought even knowing that it still sounds like it's about a relationship coming to an end ("Lovers at a great divide")
ps. ^^ referring to the lines "and why'd you lie when you wanna die, when you hurt inside don't know what you lie for anyway." speaks a lot more than the literal interpretation doesn't it?
i think in the first verse it is infact Why do you laugh When I know you hurt inside?
it is a catchy song, likely to be a single, they are spoilt for choice single wise on this album! i can see this one being amazing on the festival scene!
as for the song, the relationship is on the decline, the lovers have come to the point where they have to decide whether to carry on together, or to their own seperate ways! as a result, the lonely sole bit, could either mean that she has no feelings for him, and is taking him for a ride, just having fun and not reall caring! however it could be the spiteful thing someone would say if you just break up with someone and then u see them out with another bloke, acting as if you were never part of your life!
i think! lol
