The Soup Lyrics

The soup
Was hot and split pea and on the stove
And Michael and Marry and Bugsy and Buster were occupied
The pictures had clear resolution in their minds
And the plan was fool-proof but there was so much to do

First they'd decide who'd drive the car
Who'd wear the masks and who'd bribe the cops
Then they'd decide what were the rules
When do you shoot and when do you pull back?

They'd synchronize their watches
And their heartbeats in their rib-cages
This can't be a mess, this can't be a mess

Nobody knows how it comes to be
That they think that they must and they do what they can
But the cops are right there and the sirens, they blare
And the by-starers stare and everyone just stands

Bugsy went down first, then Marry
Then Michael drove off and Buster just ran
He was running like a child running in a game of tag
Until he was hit, until he was it...

i think of the soup as a symbol of their impending doom. it's boiling and bubbling on the stove and getting hotter by the minute, unnoticed while the group makes plans to do something that will ultimately lead to their demise - foreshadowing.

I have absolutely no idea what this song means. It seems like a bank robbery but what that represents, I have no idea. I really really love this song though.

"The pictures had clear resolution in their minds" I think that's the lyric, not "the pictures as clear as an illusion."

The bank robbery is pretty obvious. What interests me is the soup. I mean, she starts and ends with the soup, but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out its relationship to the rest of the song.

Anyway, I love the way that she describes Buster as running until he's it. She takes this serious moment and relates it to playing tag. It's amazing.

i want to know...what the hell does soup have to do with robberies

I read that nitroglycerin can be called "soup" and that bank robbers used to use it to destroy the doors of the vaults.

I thing the soup represents the fact that they are normal people. They are eating soup just like anybody else ya know? That's what makes sense to me!

You know the part where it says, "Nobody knows how it comes to be that they think that they must and they do what they can..."? I think it means that they think they need more money but they actually don't because they have food to eat (soup) and they're surviving. They are to occupied to even notice.

what cd is this on?

I know for a fact this is about Bugsy Siegel. The second I heard that name, I knew. He was a famous gangster in New York and California. This song is about a heist him, Mickey Cohen (a well known Jewish gang boss), and from what I can find online, one of his 4 mistresses Mary were planning. (I couldn't find a Buster, though I'm pretty sure it was a popular nickname of the time) Amazing song.
