Hold on slow down again from the top now and tell me everything
I know I've been gone for what seems like forever
But I'm here now waiting
To convince you that I'm not a ghost or a stranger
But closer than you think
She said just go on
To what you pretend is your life
But please don't die on me

Wings won't take me
Heights don't faze me
So take a step
But don't look down
Take a step

Now I'm standing on the rooftop, ready to fall
I'm think I'm at the edge now but I could be wrong
I'm standing on a rooftop ready to fall

Perpetual motion, the image won't focus
A blur is all that's seen
But here in this moment like the eye of the storm
It all came clear to me
I found a shoulder to lean on
An infallible reason to live all by itself
I took one last look from the heights that I once loved
And then I ran like hell

Wings won't take me
Heights don't faze me
So take a step
But don't look down
Take a step

Now I'm standing on the rooftop ready to fall
I'm think I'm at the edge now but I could be wrong
I'm standing on the rooftop ready to fall

I count the times that I've been sorry
I know, I know
Now my compassion slowly drowns
I know, I know
If there's a time these walls could guard you
I know, I know
Then let that time be right now

Now I'm standing on the rooftop
Now I'm standing on the rooftop ready to fall
I'm standing on the rooftop ready to fall
I'm think I'm at the edge now but I could be wrong
I'm standing on the rooftop ready to fall

Now I'm standing on the rooftop (ready to fall)
Now I'm standing on the rooftop (ready to fall)
Now I'm standing on a rooftop (ready to fall)
Now I'm standing on a rooftop ready to fall

Now that I've read these responses, I see the environmental meaning in here, but I agree with Mike Tedious (I think that was the name?), and this is one of those songs that still means something different to me.

I don't think it's necessarily about meth in particular, but when I first looked up the lyrics to this song (I couldn't understand what they were singing), the very first thing that came across my mind was addiction. For the situations I was going through at the time, it became more specifically about coke addiction.

    ...

The first verse is talking about the protagonist trying to reconnect with their friends after having become so in love with coke that they've been focusing solely on that. Even if it's only been two weeks, once you become an addict, even a few days as such can seem like an eternity to the people who were there for you before, even during your fledging abuse. Coke (along with any other harder, more expensive drug) can ruin relationships, and the "just go on to what you pretend is your life, but please don't die on me" is basically their former friend saying they've tired of trying to intervene and can't handle them anymore, but they still care enough to always be there for them anyways ("don't die ON ME") and don't want anything horrible to happen.

The "wings won't take me" quote is saying that they've probably gotten so bad and consumed so much that they've possibly overdosed at some point, or become close to it. They haven't died, and instead of seeming thankful for that, they see death as their only guaranteed means of rehabilitation, and feel disappointed.

"Heights don't phase me" is a reference to tolerance. They've gotten so immune to the amounts they used to have that hardly anything gives them the same rush. Also, at the worst points of addiction, you sometimes don't even feel any real happiness at all, but rather a surge of emotions or nothing at all. Yet you'll still feel the need for the drug just to be able to get out of bed and move around. This could mean that it's become just a necessity for them, rather than an indulgence. And even though they can't stop using, they can't even feel the same high, which is leading to them questioning their life at this point.

"Take a step, but don't look down" means to seek help and stick to it. They shouldn't think they'll go back to the miseries of sobriety, but view it as an opportunity to find new and better natural highs.

"Standing on the rooftop ready to fall" means they've hit rock bottom, but..."I think I'm at the edge now but I can be wrong" means they still have the classic addict mentality. They know they've gone too far, but they still don't want to admit it, and are trying to reason with themselves to make them think they're still okay.

The first half of the second verse sounds like they're having an overdose (blurred vision, lack of concentration), perhaps the real rock bottom moment that not only comes close to really killing them this time, but finally makes them realise what they've become.

"The eye of the storm" is the mental, physical, and emotional pain of OD'ing.

"It all came clear to me, I found a shoulder to lean on" is them seeking treatment.

"I took one last look from the heights that I once loved and then I ran like hell" is them looking back at the mess they've left, the people they've hurt, the damage they've done to themselves, and just every fucked up decision they've made, and deciding to just quit, cold turkey. The "heights" they once loved was the high they used to depend on, and them running like hell means they see the atrociousness of it all and don't ever want to release that side of themselves again.

The bridge is an extended apology, and it's the only time the song speaks to another person and doesn't sound like someone talking about themselves.

    ...

Anyways, that's just the way I view it. And even though every song is written with certain true meanings, I honestly think the dependency issue makes a lot more sense.

Although reading it again, it sounds like someone quitting a band to be with the family they left feeling abandoned while on tour.

Gadjits, The
He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
