She Watch Channel Zero?! Lyrics

The woman makes the men all pause
And if you got a woman
She might make you forget yours
There's a 5 letter word
To describe her character
But her brains being washed by an actor
And every real man that tries to approach
Come the closer he comes
He gets dissed like a roach

REFRAIN:
I don't think I can handle
She goes channel to channel
Cold lookin' for that hero
She watch channel zero

CHORUS:
She watch, She watch (4x)
(Flavor Ad lib)

2, 7, 5, 4, 8 she watched she said
All added up to zero
And nothing in her head
She turns and turns
And she hopes the soaps
Are for real - she learns
Is that it ain't true, nope
But she won't survive
And rather die and lie
Falls a fool - for some dude - on a tube

REPEAT REFRAIN
CHORUS

Trouble vision for a sister
Because I know she don't know, I quote
Her brains retrained
By a 24 inch remote
Revolution a solution
For all our children
But all her children
Don't mean as much as the show, I mean
Watch her worship the screen, and fiend
For a TV ad
And it just makes me mad

REPEAT REFRAIN
CHORUS

I agree with what everyone else has said about too much T.V.

"And who else but PE have had the balls to even pick this up"

Black Flag, The Misfits, and maybe Bad Religion have all criticized T.V. in their lyrics before.

@Richard Enahobo Which is why GOOD hiphop and GOOD punk are like brothers and need to respect each other.

The song is about a woman obsessed with watching soap operas on the tv 24/7. She's so obsessed with the guy on the tube; therefore, she won't pay attention to her man...hence, the channels she's watching could be named "Channel Zero."

This song is also about how completely oblivious people can be to their culture and their own idocy by watching too much television. This was made when the MTV culture was getting huge, and when everyone just started turning into zombies for tv.

Not only is it about the woman, I think it's also a general outlook on television and how it can fry people's brains.

...and the internet doesn't fry your brain? I think it's more about disillusionment with reality. Television here can be seen to provide hollow, unrealistic role models for life. She's cold lookin' for that hero, something which TV can provide, but ultimately which is false. She rejects any man (who gets dissed like a roach) because he can not live up to any expectations which the TV creates, and that's what makes him mad. I agree with scarecrow in that context is important, Generation X was seen as the MTV generation. This song shows the harmful effects of what Baudrillard would describe as hyperreality, what could also be said as "the myth being larger than any man".

And Adorno far earlier than Baudrillard.

And who else but PE have had the balls to even pick this up, let alone the cahonas to critique it with a funky groove?

It's the distortion in representation, the implicit authoritarianism of all mass media. Women have always been targeted. In many ways, they're most susceptible to it, still today.

Over a decade later and now it's not just women. It's not just TV. But all printed and online media.

@Duino Women have always been targeted. In many ways, they're most susceptible to it, still today. - DEFINITELY TRUE IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA AGE! "You're blind baby, to the facts of who you are..." There's still authoritarianism even on social media (and a central point of censorship, too).

I concur with you there Duino, Horkheimer and Adorno had some good points. Scary when you think of how media-saturated our world is today. Great tune anyhow.

Ironic how Flavor sold out to the TV industry recently.

@miestersean Agreed. He wasn't just a clown back when he was in PE...
