Still Lyrics

I must give the impression
That I have the answers for everything
You were so disappointed
To see me unravel so easily

But it's only change
Only everything I know
Even the things that seem still are still changing

Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada

Mother misses her baby
But I only wanted to be me
She changed address and haircuts
And boyfriends and lightbulbs, it's easy

But it's only change
Only everything I know
Even the things that seem still are still changing

Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada

I stay focused on details
It keeps me from feeling the big things
But watch the microscope long enough
Things that seem still are still changing

Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada

Even the things that seem still are still changing
Even the things that seem still are still
Even the things that seem still are still changing
Even the things that seem still are still changing

Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada
Lada lada ladadadadada lada ladadadadadada

i think this song talks about how a person wanted them to be who they were, but people change and the other person fails to realize that change is a part of life

I don't understand how there is only one person commenting on this song. This song is a very well done song and one of my favorite Ben Folds song.

I think the lyrics are pretty straightforward, but I can read a little more into them.

We often hide our insecurities and feelings towards change. Change is inevitable - whether we accept this or not. People will be born, live, and die. There will be joy, tragedy, and plenty of monotony. Life continues on, even if have problems dealing with this. Some people can adapt or change without being fazed: "She changed address and haircuts and boyfriends and lightbulbs, it's easy".
Others can't handle changes without feeling as if they're losing control over everything, e.g. "I must give the impression that I have the answers for everything, you were so disappointed to see me unravel so easily".

"But it's only change, only everything I know" - a bit sarcastic/wry. It's "only" everything you know.

"Mother misses her baby but I only wanted to be me" I think this refers to feeling pressure to stay the same for someone else - namely a parent. Children grow into adults with attributes their parents may not have envisioned. Not everyone becomes the person their parent wants them to be, and we have to be ourselves and pursue our own dreams.

"I stay focused on details, it keeps me from feeling the big things But watch the microscope long enough, things that seem still are still changing" Again, self-explanatory. As said before, this song is about underlining control issues. It's hard to accept that we cannot control virtually any parts of our world. We can focus on small things that we CAN control and ignore the bigger picture, but eventually something will happen to bring us back to reality.

It's a beautiful song. I relate to the lyrics since I tend to be scientific minded to avoid feeling overwhelmed by things beyond my control. Then minor changes occur and the sh*t hits the fan. It IS a soothing song, actually, I agree with the comment above. :)

I have loved this song for a while now and my favorite line is, of course: "Even the things that seem still are still changing," because the words together are so beautiful, intelligent and true (as is the entire song). For some reason, the first verse always really gets me: "I must give the impression / That I have the answers for everything /You were so disappointed / To see me unravel so easily"

This verse makes me think so much about myself and others and how we often, can't see or won't see, beyond the impression that is given to us by people in our lives. It's almost like we forget that their human and affected by a host of things in life mostly having to do with the reality of change. And then when we're on the other side of the equation we can't believe that anyone we know could possibly think we're so unaffected and expect so much from us.

i think this song is about how someone is breaking up with someone because the person singing has changed a lot and the relaitionship is not working anymore

This song is about someone who has control issues - they try and control everything around them, but deep down, they have issues with change. The world around them keeps changing, and they are powerless to stop it. They are trying to convince themselves that it's only change and it's no big deal. The reason they have these control issues is a changeable childhood, being moved about by Mother. They say how they focus on details (implying their control issues extend even to the minutest detail), but eventually reflect that even atoms are changing.

Given the almost lullaby-like tone to the song, it almost feels like someone reassuring themself that change does not necessarily equal bad, trying to soothe troubled nerves and get some sleep.

I agree with the comments about change in general, but the words make me think of a transgender person.

"Mother misses her baby, but I only wanted to be me" - the person's parents (or friends/family in general) miss them as their original identity, but the person can't help it because they want to be happy with their new transformation.

"She changed address and haircuts and boyfriends and lightbulbs, it's easy" - how a person can feel that it's okay to change so many things about yourself and how you live, but somehow their change is unacceptable to society.
