Voice Inside My Head Lyrics
I was only a kid
When I said goodbye to you
Ten summers ago
But it feels like yesterday
Lost, scared and alone
Nothing I could give to you
I tried, I really did
But I couldn't find another way
And I want and I need
Somehow to believe
In the choice I made
Am I better off this way
I can hear the voice inside my head
Saying you should be with me instead
Every time I'm feeling down, I wonder
What would it be like with you around
So I, I made my way
Cold and roaming in the wild
I'm forever changed
By someone I never knew
Now I've, I've got a place
I've got a husband and a child
But I'll never forget
What I've given up in you
And I want, I need
Somehow to believe
In the choice I made
Am I better off this way
I can hear the voice inside my head
Saying you should be with me instead
Every time I'm feeling down, I wonder
What would it be like with you around
And I want, I need
Somehow to believe
In the choice I made
Am I better off this way
When I said goodbye to you
Ten summers ago
But it feels like yesterday
Lost, scared and alone
Nothing I could give to you
I tried, I really did
But I couldn't find another way
Somehow to believe
In the choice I made
Am I better off this way
Saying you should be with me instead
Every time I'm feeling down, I wonder
What would it be like with you around
Cold and roaming in the wild
I'm forever changed
By someone I never knew
Now I've, I've got a place

This song has to be about a past abortion or adoption. The key phrases are "I'm forever changed By someone I never knew" and the repetitive use of the word "choice". It's really sad.
Every time I'm feeling down, I wonder What would it be like with you around?
The reads like it should be a comforting line, but it is the exact opposite. At your lowest you are at your most vulnerable to the ghosts of past choices.
An incredible song, extraordinarily bold and brave. Of course it's about abortion - and a slap in the face to those who ever think it is an easy choice.
@vaguely I've been trying to decide whether it's adoption or abortion for years now. I think most of the lyrics suggest adoption because it suggests that the child is with someone else ("you should be with me instead"). However, talking about "am I better off this way" (instead of " are YOU better off this way") together with the reference to her "choice" certainly suggests abortion. I'd rather it was adoption, so I've decided not to reach a conclusion ...

fighting off feelings of jealousy from a past love. And even tho she has a husband and kids sometimes she wonders how it would be to be with him again.
I agree hvgricks... It's def. about abortion or adoption.
It seems clear to me that this song is about an adoption/abortion. It's surprisingly upbeat for a song with such a sad message, if you ask me.
I don't think it sounds upbeat at all. I hear the chords being played very strongly on all the instruments. Her voice is pretty neutral throughout the song, as if she doesn't know what to make her of her decision--just like the lyrics suggest. This was a very difficult decision for her and after a decade, she's still unsure of her feelings towards it. The chords that are being played very strongly, add to the subject. This song is about something very powerful, I don't think it's upbeat at all. Her voice is not at all happy-sounding. And the steel-guitar...

@MissCady If you think this song sounds to cheerful I'd hate to see what music you think is depressing or Morose. You probably see the Smiths as A comedy act.

Man I really don't like most country music, but I really love this song. And yeah I think you guys are right. It must be about an adoption. Very poignant song.
I don't think it's about abortion, however I do think it's about giving a child up for adoption. What swayed me towards that was the line "saying you should be with me instead", so it sounds like there's a child out there, just with a diffferent family. I could be wrong though. This is definitely one of my favorite songs on their new album.
The line "saying you should be with me instead" could also imply that instead of being with the mother, the child is with Death. That's the way, I took it. But whatever the truth is, you're right. This is an incredible song and one I love listening to over and over

@derekblu85 Look at the lyrics more closely. The key line is the 1 that says I'm Forever changed by someone I never knew. If she had the child and it was adopted she still would have known it for an instant or so. Abortion is also indicated by her saying she tried to find another way but couldn't. Adoption while difficult on the mother is not a fate to be so drastically avoided.

Agreed. What gives it away is that the Dixie Chicks would not discuss this song in interviews. Its a shame because this means they probaly won't release it as a single and its probaly my favorite song on the album.
I think it could do with a break up and someone else being involved so Nathalie doesn't really have a choice. She has to break it off. While she's happy now she still wonders when things aren't going well. We all do it.
I thought so too, but then I looked at the lyrics carefully and the line "I'm forever changed by someone I never knew". That to me just told me that this has to be about a child. Whether she gave it up for adoption or had an abortion, I'm not sure. But, that line just made me believe that this is in fact not about a romantic love.

In the AOL Music Sessions interview portion, Maines did make a comment that it was not about an ex... I also think it might be about giving up a child for adoption, but it's fine to make of it whatever you want and they've encouraged that as well.
