I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

This song is so heartbreakingly beautiful. I can totally just see the scene of these two people that felt invincible to be together and they couldn't see any signs of flaws in their relationship, but now that's all they have left. It's that feeling you have when you're with someone you really love and want to spend the rest of your life with and you just smile that smile that you only smile when it's the happiest you've ever felt. It's that perfect moment in life when you wish you could just hit pause forever. And he misses those days when he felt like life was perfect. He misses the days when there were no cares or worries. I have that feeling all the time. I'm with ya Matt!

This song makes me yearn for late teenage years when I was young, naive and in love. Everything seemed wonderful. I don't know if it's ever possible to be as vulnerable as you are during a first love before all the skepticism, cynicism, etc.
I think that when he says 'What happened to thinking the world was flat? What happened to that?' that he is talking about how sometimes when you are with someone in a relationship life can seem so simple and everything becomes idealised but now things have got a bit messy and he's thinking how stupid they wereto think like that... it feels like regret but with nostalgia...

It makes the cliche of teenage relationships become something real that is painfully beautiful. And it describes vulnerability and loss of innocence in the most beautiful way.
i agree with what you're saying completely. i think it makes the cliche of all relationships quite vulnerable, really. you don't have to be young and innocent to feel this way, reflecting on a relationship. some people just do that to you, regardless of age.

Its like when you reach that point after a fight where after all the screaming is done and all the things that were said that cant be taken back... then there is just nothing left to say... nothing will take back the words spoken.. and no matter what other words you try to say they will just turn into something negetive. That moment where you still care about the other person deeply and wish it could just be like it was before, you remember those happy feelings and moments of bliss and wonder how on earth it got to where it is.. but nothing is left..

I think this is about finding out more about someone and realizing maybe it won't work, or realizing you love them but you're not in love with them. A lot of Matt's tunes have a theme of some sort of romantic yet melancholy realization. This one seems no different.
Or maybe they just made the mistake of asking each other how many people they'd slept with before each other. That'll always do it.
I think mago nailed it. They were in the type of whirlwind romance where everything was great and safe, but eventually reality slowly sunk in. It can never stay carefree.
