So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Physician heal thyself
Can you cut yourself precise and deep
As to reach in and remove whats dying inside of you
A colossus of irony
Physician heal thyself
With great intelligence and experience
Can you prescribe a way not to die alone
We are not what we are
The structure deconstructing
Arrogance and blasphemy
There are no controls
Like the unfornuate patient
The physician dies sick and alone
Can you cut yourself precise and deep
As to reach in and remove whats dying inside of you
A colossus of irony
Physician heal thyself
With great intelligence and experience
Can you prescribe a way not to die alone
We are not what we are
The structure deconstructing
Arrogance and blasphemy
There are no controls
Like the unfornuate patient
The physician dies sick and alone

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
I think this is about how ironic it is that we try to and help other people with their problems while we still have glaring flaws in our own lives that we refuse to fix.
yeah thats basically what dan said on zao's official website. he said that it was definetly ironic about how people dont fix problems they tell others to kick. the new song sounds heavier than some of the older stuff. i cant wait to see what they do after they made what in my opinion was their best CD, The Funeral of God. It certainly was their most ambitious and it sounded phenomonal. I can't wait for June 13!
So far, I've only been able to listen to this song in a noisy homeroom (right now), but ti sounds great. I can't wait for the new album either.
Thanks for mentioning that interview, I guess they put that up after I downloaded/posted the song.
Just thought I'd add that Luke 4:23 reads as follows:
"Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.' "
I dunno about you guys but I think thier is thier best album in a long time
this is definitely a good album, but of the ones i have (self-titled, Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest, The Funeral of God, and this one) i put it last. of course, last for Zao surpasses first for almost any other band. i rank them The Funeral of God, self-titled, Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest, and this one. The Funeral of God gets me because i love the whole concept of the album. Where Blood.... has Ravage Ritual, which is my favorite Zao song, self-titled was the second of their cds i listened to and At Zero and Five Year Winter are amazing, but of course, this one rocks hard as well
I wonder why Zao never changed the band name. Afterall, they don't have any original members, and the oldest one they have came 4 years after the band started anyways. How long have these guys been around anyways? Like 15 years?
since 1988. and their band name is the greek word for "alive" meaning they're only alive in God or something. I heard somewhere the singer of demon hunter used to be the singer of zao is this true?
Fenrir777, I think some of the guys from demon hunter used to be in training for utopia, which is probably where that statement came from, don't quote me on that though :)
