So Much Like My Dad Lyrics

I know that I surprised you comin' home
It's not my usual time of year
But I've got myself a problem
And I know that I might find the answer here
Remember when I was dad's pride and joy
And your little man
Every time that I got hurt
You were there to give a hand
You'd pick me up and you'd kiss my hurt away
Remember what you'd say
"Boy, you're gettin' more like him each and everyday"
Can we have a talk like it was yesterday
Your boy's back in trouble and he needs you right away

She said she's gonna leave me momma
Nothing on God's green earth will make her stay
I can't live with out her momma
But this time you can't kiss the hurt away
But if I'm so much like my dad
There must've been times you felt her way
So tell me word for word what he said
That always made you stay

She said she's gonna leave me momma
But if I'm so much like my dad
There must've been times you felt her way
So tell me word for word what he said
That always made you stay

Is it already time

why doesn't this song have any comments? it is, in my opinion, the best true country song ever written. it's about a grown man whose mother always told him he was "so much like his dad" when he was a kid. now that he's grown, his girlfriend/fiance/wife is leaving him. he asks his mom to tell him word-for-word what his father used to tell her to keep them together, because since he's "so much like his dad," his mother must have felt the same way as his girlfriend in the past.

wow you're right. Don't know if I'd say best country song ever written, but it is, at least lyrically, quite beautifully written.

I tell people about this song all the time. The song writing structure... the whole first part he's kind of beating around the bush talking to his Mother.... then he drops the bomb... "She's gonna leave me Momma!"... And such a sad chord progression.... with a very deep, twisted logic why he is so much like his Dad. A broken heart is always looking for that love potion, or in this case the "magic words" to get a love back. I honestly can't get through the song without tears in my eyes... I need a psychiatrist to figure THAT one out! Ha!
