(When It) Don't Come Easy Lyrics

Red lights are flashing on the highway
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home tonight
Everywhere the waters getting rough
Your best intentions may not be enough
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home tonight

But if you break down
I'll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I'll try to remind you
And stay by you when it don't come easy

I don't know nothing except change will come
Year after year what we do is undone
Time keeps moving from a crawl to a run
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home

You're out there walking down a highway
And all of the signs got blown away
Sometimes you wonder if you're walking in the wrong direction

But if you break down
I'll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I'll try to remind you
And stay by you when it don't come easy

So many things that I had before
That don't matter to me now
Tonight I cry for the love that I've lost
And the love I've never found
When the last bird falls
And the last siren sounds
Someone will say what's been said before
Some love we were looking for

But if you break down
I'll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I'll try to remind you
And stay by you when it don't come easy

This 14 year-old song popped up on a Spotify playlist and its easy beauty wounded me. She describes in a few lines, really, all we need in a deep relationship. A commitment to be there, even go find you, if needed. Most importantly, this promise continues WHEN things don’t get easy. Stuff WILL happen and you just move through it.

Where, to me, this song gains meaning is if both partners feel the same way. If just her, then the song is nothing more than a mother’s lullaby. If a mutual, simple promise, then it offers a mindset to overcome the things that might keep one from getting home.

While I’m not a big fan of country music, this feels like a near perfect song.

@Mahar Patty Griffin is not country music.

I just love this song. Everything you both said. She really hits to the heart of it in this one, time going from a crawl to a run, regrets for love lost, love unknown, just reaching out, we all want and need to be loved, even if we never had or know how and this carries on from age to age. When the last bird falls and the last siren sounds someone will say something that's been said before. It's only love we're looking for. It's like a crystal truth. Sometimes Patty Griffin listening to you is something deeply spritual. Lol, I think I'm in love.

I first heard this song when Mellissa Ethridge sang it with you, during a time my daughter was getting back in a relationship I felt/feel is not good for her. (long story of course but they got back together after having bad legal troubles. I expressed my feelings (to no avail, they continued) I thought of the two of them. They tell me things are different. at the end of the day I shared this song to them and advised them to remember hard times come and go but if the love is true turn it into strength, because your path now is difficult and... " It don't come easy." just be gentle with your feelings yet strong for each other. Thank you Patty I am a true fan! now you have 2 more!!!
